Magic of the Cup as referee pulls rabbit from the hat for County

Stockport County are two divisions above Hyde and worlds apart in terms of revenue, numbers of fans and player budgets, but the margins looked much closer on the pitch today. Without the referee ignoring his linesman and inventing a shirt pull, Hyde would probably have taken County back to Ewen Fields.

Stockport are a typical Jim Gannon side. Big units who play percentage football, with a little bit of pace. The right fullback was their best player and the Centre Half (5) was given man of the match which about sums it up.

Hyde set up in a 5-3-2 and looked good value at 0-0 after 30 minutes. Both sides had enjoyed spells with the ball, and although County caused some early problems, Hyde grew into the game, and looked a threat.

On 32 minutes County won a throw on the right level with the penalty area and the resulting long throw was flicked on before being clearly handled by County forward Scott Spencer. The referee blew immediately awarding a penalty. The linesman, to his credit, raised his flag and informed the referee that it was a County handball, but rather than taking the opportunity to reverse the penalty as a free kick to Hyde, he justified his decision with an indication that it was for a shirt pull not a hand ball. Pity. County stepped up and fired the ball home. 1-0. 5 minutes later, a corner to the back post was missed, when the County forward clearly had a handful of the defenders shirt, stopping him getting up for the ball, and the player running in at the back headed home.

Cadman had an excellent opportunity to pull one back on the stroke of half time following great work by Bevins, but shot wide when a square pass back to Bevins would surely have allowed him to score.

HT 2-0 County

The second half had Hyde on the front foot for the opening 25 minutes, and they enjoyed good possession and decent opportunities to progress up the field. An excellent spin and run by Bevis created a half chance on 60 minutes, a left foot shot by Pearson sailed wide, and a great run in behind by Wassi, who looked good throughout, led to nothing and Hyde were unable to trouble the County keeper.

The final 20 minutes had county taking control back and seeing the game out, with a couple of good opportunities to add the their goal tally.

FT 2-0 County

Darren Kelly and his squad should be pleased with the Cup run and their efforts. They looked decent today, and are more than capable of playing at a higher level. Its back to the league on Monday night away to Brighouse, and the boys need to secure their first away win and push on between now and Christmas. For those who are in and around the squad on a daily basis, it is clear we have a good group who are technically and physically good enough to win against anyone in our league. They are also developing and learning all the time, and we need to support them through the process. I am confident we will be in the mix when the new year comes around.
