04-12-08 Bradford PA v Hyde Utd         Monday 24th Nov 7.45pm ko

Another difficult away day for the young tigers wasn’t made any easier by a swirling wind and numerous withdrawals through injury and work commitments.
Making their debut for Hyde were 3 players, Chris Clowrey in goal, Tom Manship in central midfield and Chris Clowrey at right back.

However the young tigers made a solid start and an early free kick from Ingham went wide. On 14 mins a shot by  Baldwin  was heading for goal when Shevlin just yards from the line decided to touch it in, allowing the referee to disallow the goal for offside. However a minute later good work from Igenoza led to a crude tackle in the box. The following penalty was taken by the captain on the night Manship, who scored. 0 – 1

The first half zipped along as both teams played good football with  Bradford  coming closest hitting the post just before half time.

Half time Bradford 0 – 1 Hyde

Shortly after the start of the second half Walsh was replaced by by Diggle after sustaining a hip injury. Shortly after, a goal by Igenoza seemed to have wrapped up the points. 0 – 2
Bradford  had other ideas and began pouring forward forcing Clowrey into a few good saves.
Substitutions were made to try and keep what we had with Dempsey and Trainer coming on for Igenoza and Shevlin respectively, and in the final minute a breakaway resulted in Ingham drilling the ball home. 0 – 3

Final score Bradford PA 0 – 3 Hyde United

The young Tigers appear to be back on track with a good away win, this will hopefully wipe away the memory of the last 2 games.

Thackley v Hyde Utd Saturday 11th October

Another away day in yorkshire, however the squad for the young tigers wasnt as strong as usual. The 1st team were playing up the road at Farsley and had added 5 key players to their squad. This, coupled with injuries and work commitments meant the young tigers were down to the bare bones.
The most important person missing was Holland the goalkeeper, who was withdrawn at the tigers last game with a virus and had not recovered. This meant on the morning of the game, the physio Pemberton was told he would have to take on the goalies gloves!!

For the first 20 mins of the match Hyde were coping fine and even made the best chances when Barnett ran clear of the Thackley defence and was clean through but blazed the chance over the bar. A couple of minutes later he had a clear header from a corner, but headed down into the ground and the ball was cleared. Then the game turned on yet another harsh refereeing decision. A long punt downfield from the Thackley keeper cleared everyone and bounced into the box, as Pemberton came to collect, The forwards studs were high and dangerous, as they collided the ball broke loose and was tapped into an empty net. 1-0
From this point Thackley began to punt continual high balls onto Pemberton, sensing a weakness and they were rewarded with 3 more goals as Pemberton struggled in goals.

Half time Thackley 4 - 0 Hyde Utd

Tensions were rising in the young tigers dressing room as blame was passed from forwards for not finishing the chances, midfield for poor passing and tackling, defence for allowing too many free kicks and corners and the goalkeeper for his mistakes. All in all the first half performance was unacceptable and Colgan and McMahon expected a response in the second or this could be double figures!!

All credit to this young tigers side, the second half was chance after chance, JORDAN had a header over the bar, as did Gresty. Trey Balwin a 16 year old making his debut had 2 shots which the keeper did well to save and on it went. If Hyde would have got the goal their second half play deserved, a comeback could have been on the cards. Unfortunately a quickly taken free kick for Thackley was floated over Pembertons head. 5 - 0

Final score Thackley 5 - 0 Hyde Utd

A great second half effort from the young tigers was all in vain, but if they are thinking of silverware this season that second half performance should stand them in good stead..........but losing anymore games is not an option!!!

Bradford PA away is now Wednesday night 7.45pm (1st oct)

16-09-08 Hyde Utd   v   Guiseley        Monday 15th September

Buoyed by a fantastic win in Yorkshire last week, this home game would be a stern test against a Guiseley side that were unbeaten this season. A strong line up, boosted by Wharton and Tandy who were returning from injury.

The match started at a frantic pace with both teams prepared to take on players and pass the ball. Guiseley came close after 6 mins when a back pass to Bernstein wasn’t dealt with. As his kick was blocked, the ball spun towards goal and back pedalling, he managed to claw the ball off the line. The Guiseley players and managers were convinced the ball had crossed the line. After some of the decisions we have had recently, it was a surprise the ref didn’t give it.
The young tigers midfield began to get a grip of the game with slick interchanges, and Owens was causing no end of problems for their defence, cutting in from the right and either setting up chances for the forwards or letting fly himself. In the 23rd min slick passing from Wharton and Owens found Coward in space and he made no mistake as he slotted the ball home. 1 – 0
A few minutes later the same combination found Igenoza in space and a fine finish made it 2 – 0. Hyde were now enjoying themselves, Guiseley were clearly deflated after their bright start and almost conceded an own goal from an Igenoza back heel, Oakes then had a shot cleared off the line, but they finally got their third just before half time as Coward headed a well worked corner routine. 3 – 0

Half Time Hyde 3 – 0 Guiseley

Colgan’s team talk was being done for him….the hair dryer treatment coming from the changing room next door signified how well the team were playing. He stressed they would be fired up for the second half, but to stay calm and keep passing the ball.

True to form, Guiseley came out fired up, and within a minute of the half a Guiseley player was sent off after a terrible tackle. From the resultant free kick, Oakes, with a good impression of David Beckham, curled the ball over the wall, but unfortunately it crashed against the bar with the goal keeper rooted. The rest of the half was littered with Guiseley players attempting GBH on the young tigers, which was a pity, because they had played some good football in the first half. Rick who had come on for Wharton, continued the calm at the heart of the midfield, Shevlin and Gee replaced Igenoza and Trainer who both had worked their socks off.
The scoring finished where it started…. from Coward who completed his hat trick. A magnificent 12 pass move involving Campbell, Owens and Rick to name a few, finished with Coward slotting the ball into the net. 4 – 0

Full Time Hyde Utd 4 – 0 Guiseley

Fantastic football and goals in the first half, keeping their cool and the ball in the second. The young tigers seem to be clicking into gear and a clean sheet to boot. Our next game is over a month away, hopefully we can get some games rearranged to maintain the momentum.

11-09-08  Harrogate Railway  v  Hyde Utd     Wednesday 10th September

An away game in Yorkshire always causes problems, players working, unable to get transport, getting lost!! But the strength of the substitutes bench emphasised how strong the reserve squad is this year. Could they find their shooting boots after a loss and a draw in their opening games?

Shevlin and Coward started upfront and after only 2 mins, Shevlin had a clear header which he put wide. A couple of mins later Owens was clean through but put his shot wide. The young tigers were enjoying themselves in the opening minutes but were then hit by the sucker punch as a mistake at the back gifted Harrogate the lead. 1 – 0
A few minutes later, Colgan was fuming with the referee, his assistant had flagged for a foul in the left back area, but the ref totally ignored it as the Harrogate player crossed into the box and the ball was tucked home. The referee eventually acknowledged the flag as players surrounded him, but after a chat with his assistant decided to overrule him!! So much for respect……… if the ref doesn’t respect his assistant’s decisions, how does he expect respect from the players and coaches!! 2 – 0

The important thing was for Hyde to stay calm; they were playing the better football and just needed to let their football do the talking. The young tigers hit back straight away, as Owens curled a free kick into the box that was dropped into the net by the goalie. 2 – 1
The young tigers sensed blood and were playing slick football, as Coward was played through, he rounded the goalkeeper and tapped home. 2 – 2 and only 20 mins gone!!
The scoring wasn’t finished for the 1st half though, Harrogate scored in the 30th min to make it 3 – 2, and Oakes waltzed through the Harrogate defence, tucking the ball under the keeper for 3 – 3 just before half time.

Half time   Harrogate 3 – 3 Hyde Utd

The message in the dressing room was to remain calm, we were playing the better football and some of the referees decisions were shocking, but our football would win the day.

The message was taken on board, minutes after the re-start a good shot from Coward was saved by the keeper but Shevlin was on hand to follow up. 3 – 4
The second half in comparison to the first was relatively quiet…..apart from the same dreadful decisions from the referee, and some shocking challenges from the Harrogate players. Owens put the game beyond doubt in the 72nd min, as cutting in from the right went past at least 3 players and scored a brilliant goal. 3 – 5. Game set and match

Final Score Harrogate Railway 3 - 5 Hyde Utd

A brilliant game by the young tigers capped by some fine finishing…. although with the chances created they could have doubled the score. Last season they were able to win 4 times in Yorkshire ……we are already a quarter of the way to matching that record.

06-09-08 Reserves now play at Harrogate on September 10th, 7:45pm K.O.

03-09-08 Hyde United v Pontefract Collieries       Monday 1st Sept     KO 7.45

A perfect night for a football match, as the young tigers were at home in their 2nd match of the season trying to wipe away the memory of the 1st game…….a 3 – 2 defeat at home. Colgan had hammered the team for 3 mistakes from set pieces, hopefully this week would be different!!

This new team started fantastically well and after 6 mins David Owens, a tricky right winger burst down the right and just missed with a shot curled with his left foot. Hyde quickly took control of the game with their slick passing game and Pontefract were relying on counter attacks and set pieces.
Chances came and went for the young tigers, Coward miskicked when in front of goal, Oakes forced a good save from the goalie, and Shelmerdine, Gee, Owens and Traynor all had great chances to take the lead before half time.

Half time Hyde 0 – 0 Pontefract

Changes were made at half time, Coward and Cooke were removed from the action as the 1st team had a match the next day and they would be in the squad.
The weather was starting to turn, as the rain came, but the young tigers started the 2nd half just like the first. Shevlin and Buckery coming on for Coward and Cooke.
Clear cut chances again went begging as captain Bunting hit the crossbar in the 61st min. Colgan had seen enough and bought on Igenoza for Shelmerdine, within seconds of coming on Igenoza was through on goal, he beat the goalkeeper with his shot but the ball was cleared off the line. In the 70th min Oakes fired a shot onto the post and Gee forced a fantastic save from the Pontefract goalie. Pontefract were hanging on……just, and at the full time whistle celebrated as if they had won.

Full Time Hyde United 0 – 0 Pontefract Collieries

The good points from this game, the defence was brilliant and deservedly kept a clean sheet in the face of constant free kicks into the box. The bad points, 2 points dropped, 1 point from 2 home games and the strikers mis-firing. They need to find their shooting boots quick if they want to repeat last seasons 4 wins in Yorkshire !!!
