04-11-00 HYDE UNITED 2 MARINE 1 UNIBOND Att. 381

The Tigers stole the points with a stoppage time winner in a poor game between two poor sides. Hyde had the better of the early exchanges and when Marine goalkeeper Chris Clarke dropped the ball when jumping with Matty Taylor it took some good defending to clear the danger. Hyde went ahead in the 15th minutes when Neil Hall got on the end of Paul Robertson's cross and shot past Clarke with the aid of a deflection. Marine were level on 29 minutes with a goal out of nothing. The ball fell to Mike Douglas 35 yards from goal and the defender floated the ball over Hyde's flapping 'keeper Graham Bennett and simply ran back into position as though it happens every week. Karl Robinson glanced a header onto the post for the visitors following a free lick on the right. On 51 minutes Marine had a good chance when Robinson's shot skidded on the surface but Bennett managed to parry the ball around the post. Clarke equaled his opposite number with an excellent stop to deny Simon Yeo after the striker found himself clean through on goal. Marine's Dave Thompson broke clear of the Hyde defence on the hour but Bennett blocked the striker's shot and Robinson put the follow up wide of the target. Further efforts from Hyde's Paul Taylor and Marine's Rick Bainbridge failed to find a winner and so set up a frantic last minute. Marine should have won the game when the broke down the right and crossed, substitute Neil Black connected but saw the ball hit the post. Hyde broke away and won a corner, Paul Robertson swung the ball in and Lloyd Richardson steered the ball home with his head to end Hyde's run of three straight defeats.

28-10-00 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 1 HYDE UNITED 0 FAC4qr Att. 330
The Tigers again failed to produce the goods on the road but this time it was with a greater consequence. Northampton Town away was the prize for Frickley after their sheer determination won them a place in the FA Cup first round. Hyde had good early pressure without really creating anything at a dull and blustery Westfield Lane. Matty Taylor combined with Peter Band on the right but his shot was blocked as the Tigers looked to get an advantage. Frickley soon threw doubt into the minds of the travelling supporters when on 21 minutes they cut through Hyde's defence with ease but Brendan West had his shot saved by Graham Bennett. Lee Wilkinson got away from Frickley's back line soon after but could only shoot into the hands of Mark Wilkinson. Hyde's best effort of the half came on 33 minutes when Matty Taylor crossed from the right but Simon Yeo steered his header just over the crossbar. Frickley took the lead on 39 minutes when a cross from the right was laid back for Rob Hanby to strike home from the edge of the penalty area. In the first few minutes of the second half Hyde looked as though they were going to give it their best shot and Wilkinson was unlucky to see his 30 yard lob fall wide of the target. On the hour Frickley's Cranston produced a lovely move and shot which Bennett did well to tip round for a corner. Price had the ball in the goal on 65 minutes for Frickley but his header was ruled out for offside. Hyde threw on Jody Banim and Gavin Salmon and Frickley put five in defence to counter but as time ran out so did the Visitor's ideas. Frickley may not be the prettiest footballing side around but they showed all the qualities that were lacking in Hyde and deservedlytake their place in the first round.

24-10-00 GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY 2 HYDE UNITED 1 UNIBOND Att. 253

Not the best way to prepare for Saturday's F.A. Cup tie but nevertheless a vast improvement on the shambles that was Saturday gone. The Tigers were up against a Trinity side determined to make amends for their 7-1 drubbing at Stalybridge and as early as the 9th minute Simon Drayton skinned Paul Robertson and crossed but John Foster stole the ball from Paul Watts' feet. Hyde have two good chances early on, firstly Simon Yeo broke down the left and centred for Peter Band but the lanky midfielder couldn't manage to turn and shoot. Brendan Aspinall then went close with a fizzing header from Robertson's corner. Hyde went ahead in the 20th minute, Simon Yeo outpaced the home defence and calmly chipped the ball over Trinity 'keeper Steve Curry from 18 yards. The Tigers were lucky to stay ahead on 39 minutes when Ellington's shot took a deflection forcing Graham Bennett to save with his legs, the loose ball fell to John Reed who somehow missed completely with Bennett on the floor and the goal gaping. Steve Curry produced an excellent stop to deny Paul Robertson with a blistering free kick on 41 minutes. Trinity equalised on 43 minutes when Paul Watts turned the Hyde defence and shot over Bennett from 20 yards with a fine strike. Hyde settled as the better side for much of the second half with some neat passing but without much conviction but Gainsborough went ahead on 73 minutes when Newton's through ball led to Paul Watts outpacing Gus Wilson and rolling the ball past Bennett. Hyde had the ball in the net on 80 minutes when Wilkinson connected with a Banim cross but his "Maradonaesque" effort was correctly ruled out.
Substitute Jody Banim went close with a quickly taken free kick but in the final minute it was Watts who almost sealed his hat-trick when he turned Wilson before shooting just over.

21-10-00 SPENNYMOOR UNITED 3 HYDE UNITED 0 UNIBOND Att. 137

Where do I even start with this one? The first twenty minutes of play were excellent from Hyde, good passing and a couple of chances, the question was when the goal would come not if. Jody Banim went close with a dipping shot that just cleared the angle of the goal and then his chip over Spennymoor goalkeeper John Jackson also just cleared the crossbar. Suddenly the home side get a corner on 20 minutes and towering centre-half Rob Jones scores with a header. Ok you think, this will get them going now....Nope. 37 minutes, the back line stands still with their arms in the air, Chris Leonard doesn't stand still and knocks the ball around Graham Bennett for the second with the defence still on the half way line. Simon Yeo then had two chances, his first was a glancing header from Hall's corner which strayed wide and his second was a shot from 18 yards which Jackson saved easily after Yeo got between two defenders. Spenny's Lee Bennett had a chance when he bustled Beeston off the ball but could only steer his effort wide of the post. In the second half Hyde probably got worse if anything, a lack of ideas was the most worrying aspect of the game, that along with our persistance in knocking the ball over the top when Spennymoor's back four are all 6 foot plus. A run by Lee Bennett gave a chance to Paul Zand but the striker failed to find the target with just his namesake to beat. On 65 minutes the game became dead when The Moors netted their third, Mark Beeston failed to clear and Lee Bennett rifled home from around twelve yards. Matty Taylor summed up the whole game in the final minute when, with just Jackson to beat he scooped his effort high & wide.

Hyde: Graham Bennett 5, Gus Wilson 4, Paul Robertson 5, Mark Beeston 5, Paul
Taylor 5, Peter Band 4, Matty Taylor 5, Neil Hall 5, Simon Yeo 5, Lee

16-10-00 HYDE UNITED 4 ALTRINCHAM 2 UNIBOND Att. 647
The Tigers got back to winning ways in the league at a windswept Ewen Fields with a fine win against a strong Altrincham side. Simon Yeo could have scored for Hyde in the 14th minute but blasted over the top with just Coburn to beat. Alty's James Glendenning took issue with the assistant referee over whether Yeo was offside and soon found his way down the tunnel when referee Mr Cooke sent him off. Paul Taylor went close for Hyde when he headed wide from a corner but the Tigers couldn't find any advantage in the extra man. Altrincham took the lead on 40 minutes when a cross from Gary Scott caught Kurt Edgington in no mans land and went in off the far post. Hyde immeadiately came back and could have equalised when Matty Taylor hit the post with a shot from eight yards. Just before half-time Martin McDoanld played in Simon Yeo but the striker couldn't find the target under strong pressure from Gary Talbot. On 49 minutes a surging run by Paul Robertson saw the ball fed left to substitute Lee Wilkinson, his first time cross was perfect for Simon Yeo to head an equaliser at the far post. Carl Furlong then caused havoc in the Hyde defence with a strong run but his curling shot was a fraction wide of the target. 10 man Altrincham took the lead again on 57 minutes when Gary Scott burst into the box on the right and fired low past Edgington. Hyde hit back 8 minutes later, Jody Banim bundled over Scott and then fired in a low shot which deflected off Gary Talbot and flew past Coburn into the goal. Coburn dealt well with Banim's next effort, a 25 yarder heading into the corner which required a fine save. Hyde lost Peter Band on 74 minutes when he was red-carded for reacting badly when a penalty wasn't given for a challenge on Yeo. On 80 minutes Talbot failed to connect with a long ball by Paul Taylor and Simon Yeo nipped in to steer past Coburn and put Hyde into the lead for the first time in the game. Alty weren't finished and Mark Ward brought an excellent save from Edgington with a stinging volley from the edge of the penalty area. Gavin Salmon finished things off nicely for Hyde when his strength and determination created a chance and he calmly rounded Coborn to seal the victory.

14-10-00 HYDE UNITED 2 BRIGG TOWN 1 FAC3qr Att. 422

The game started after a poignant minutes silence to mark the tragic death of Hyde secretary Ray Stanley who passed away last week. Brigg showed that there intentions were to win the game inside the first few minutes and went close through Nathan Stead who almost caught goalkeeper Kurt Edgington off his line with an outrageous lob. The game became quite scrappy for a while and for twenty minutes or so there were many stoppages as both teams got frustrated. On 38 minutes Hyde's Dave Hanson got clear of the visiting defence and charged towards goal, he squared for Matty Taylor who rifled the opener from the edge of the box. Brigg could have been level a minute later when Stead skipped through the home defence but Edgington saved with his legs to deny the forward. On the stroke of halftime it was Stead again who caused the damage for Brigg, this time with a dipping shot that Edgington parried for a corner. Substitute Lee Borman broke clear for Brigg midway through the second half, he squared for Stead who looked sure to score but Paul Taylor made an excellent challenge to deny the front man. On 78 minutes, Hyde's top scorer Simon Yeo blasted his 14th goal of the season with a thunderbolt from 25 yards. Brigg were not finished though and Simon Roach brought another save from Edgington before Lee Borman headed home an 83rd minute corner and give the visitors more hope. More Brigg pressure couldn't bring an equaliser and Hyde progressed to the next round.

10-10-00 MARINE 1 HYDE UNITED 1 UNIBOND Att. 263

The Tigers gave a display of passion, passing and panache in a great first half, unfortunately the second 45 minutes was poor, pitiful and painful. Jody Banim showed them the way inside the first five minutes when he combined with Yeo before shooting over from eighteen yards. The Tigers had a great chance to go ahead on eight minutes when Simon Yeo won a penalty kick. Paul Taylor struck the kick to the right but Marine's debutant goalkeeper, Mike Stewart, leapt to push the ball away. Hyde's dominance soon paid dividends on 18 minutes when Mark Beeston's bullet header found its way into the roof of the net following a Neil Hall corner. Marine found their way into the game more as the half progressed but it was always Hyde who looked the more likely to get a further breakthrough. The second Half saw Hyde make mistakes that were not present in the first half, in particular their passing was not up to scratch. Marine started to get on top and it was no surprise when they equalised from the penalty spot on 66 minutes. David Gamble converted after Courtney had been upended in the penalty area. Marine pressed for a winner but they found Kurt Edgington commanding his area well and during the last few minutes, after the introduction of Lee Wilkinson it was Hyde who could have won the game with a little more luck.

30-09-00 CLITHEROE 1 HYDE UNITED 2 FAC2qr Att. 408

The Tigers just about came through this tricky FA Cup tie although the home team deserve much credit after giving victory a good go. Hyde went close early on twice through Steve Tobin. John Foster kept the scores level when he cleared on the goal-line from Denney's header. Jody Banim hooked a shot wide for the Tigers and Graham Bennett did well to stop a near post flick from Stewart. Hyde went in front on 45 minutes when SIMON YEO converted from close range following McDonald's low cross from the right. The lead increased four minutes after the break when Yeo was brought down and PAUL TAYLOR slammed home the resulting penalty kick. Jody Banim had a great chance to finish the game off but shot wide with just Clitheroe 'keeper Richens to beat. On 55 minutes Paul Taylor fouled Clitheroe captain Barry Hart and he got up to take the penalty kick. He crashed his effort against the crossbar but had a stroke of luck when the referee ordered a retake. It didn't turn out to be lucky after all when Graham Bennett saved his second effort! Clitheroe piled on the pressure for much of the second half but it was Hyde who almost scored their third when Yeo brought a great save out of Richens to deny his goalbound shot. Clitheroe scored on 84 minutes when a 30 yard shot from JASON JONES dipped wickedly before bouncing beyond Bennett's grasp but the home side couldn't find the equaliser which they needed.

25-09-00 HYDE UNITED 1 COLWYN BAY 1 UNIBOND Att. 417

The same result as Saturday but a very different performance from the Tigers. They showed the levels of passion necessary to win games and that was the main thing lacking in the Bishop Auckland game. Ged Murphy, making his full debut, set the game alight in the 2nd minute by crashing a 20 yard drive against the post after picking up a lay off from Neil Hall. Colwyn Bay took the lead in the 4th minute with a wonder goal. Jonathan Cross received the ball 35 yards out and hit a wonderful strike in off the crossbar with Graham Bennett looking on in amazement. In the 6th minute Jody Banim struck the crossbar for Hyde with a scorching shot. Graham Bennett saved well with his les from Gibbons after Evans had raced away down the left for Bay. Mark Beeston was unlucky with an overhead kick which Richie Roberts held easily and Matty Taylor's looping header fell just the wrong side of the post as Hyde created chances galore. Beeston headed over from a Hall corner, Foster and Banim combined well but Roberts saved from the striker and Steve Tobin tried his luck from 18 yards but Roberts dealt with his shot easily. The second half was all one way traffic as Bay settled back to defend their lead. Roberts produced a world class save to deny Neill Hall's header on the goaline after Foster had crossed. The Tigers equalised on 57 minutes when Simon Yeo chipped Roberts from the edge of the penalty area and now it seemed as though Hyde would go on to win the game. Beeston went close at the far post as he slid in on Hall's cross. Colwyn Bay's Anthony Fenton was sent offshortly after for picking up 2 yellow cards in 2 minutes. His first was a needless caution for dissent and while his temper was still frayed he caught Martin McDonald with a brutal challenge and knew straight away that he was taking the long walk. Straight from that free kick, Yeo laid the the ball toTobin who crashed the ball off the woodwork for the third time in a night. Roberts again produced heroics to stop from a Yeo flick on to Hall's cross and Paul Taylor was unlucky with a bicycle kick in the closing minutes.

23-09-00 HYDE UNITED 1 BISHOP AUCKLAND 1 UNIBOND Att. 366

Neil Hall somehow rescued a point for the home side in a game they fully deserved to lose. He popped up inside the penalty area in the 93rd minute to volley into the top corner sending Bishop Auckland back up the A1 wondering why they hadn't won. On 10 minutes Nathan Haslam's long through ball was taken on Danny Brunskill for Bishops, his shot was saved by Hyde goalkeeper Graham Bennett but Brunskill pounced on the follow up only to his second effort strike the foot of the post. Bishops Man of the Match Michael Nelson started off their next goal attempt with a burst into the Tigers half of the field, the ball was sprayed left to Jeff Smith who crossed but Nelson couldn't stretch far enough at the back post to finish the move. Hyde's only shot on target in the first half came from a set piece, Hall whipped in a corner and Paul Taylor sent a header towards goal but Bishops keeper Stephen Jones was more than equal to the task. The away side took the lead after 37 minutes when Thomas Quinn's long free-kick was defended poorly by Hyde allowing Danny Mullanby to get behind them and shot past Bennett into the corner. Hyde came back a minute later when Jody Banim's free-kick clipped the crossbar before going over. In first half stoppage time a free-kick taken by David Bayles was magnificently pushed around the post by Bennett as Bishops threatened to run away with the game. Simon Yeo could have levelled things for Hyde early in the second half but shot over from twelve yards when he should have done much better. Jeff Smith got away from the Hyde defence only to be thwarted by Bennett but the forawrd got a second chance and squared for George Adams who shot wide with the goal at his mercy. Steve Tobin and Mark Beeston both had chance for Hyde before Neil Hall intervened in the dying seconds to equalise for the Tigers.

18-09-00 HYDE UNITED 6 CHEADLE TOWN 1 CSC1 Att. 244

Cheadle should have gone into an early lead at Ewen Fields tonight but Andy Pearce could only shoot straight at Bennett when he was clean through on goal. On 10 minutes it was Hyde who went ahead, Yeo crossed from the left and Dave Hanson pounced onto a mistake by Habershon to head into the corner. Again Yeo crossed from the left and goalkeeper Gill saved well from Hanson and then from Yeo who tried his luck from the rebound. Both Yeo and Hanson shot wide from further attempts before on 43 minutes Gill came to collect a ball on the edge of the area but fumbled to Hanson who knocked the ball sideways for Jody Banim to score an easy goal. Gill saved twice from Hanson before half time. On 48 minutes Hanson crossed for Simon Yeo to loop a header over Gill and in off the far post. It was a story of more missed chances though as Gill made more saves from Banim and Hanson. A Neil Hall cross on 70 minutes was emphatically headed home by Dave Hanson as the Tigers were looking to make it a rout. Simon Yeo fired past substitute goalkeeper Daly on 80 minutes to take the scoring to 5 and on 87 minutes Jody Banim got the sixth after Salmon had done all the hard work. Tony Coyne bagged a consolation for Cheadle a minute later but by then it was far too late.

16-09-00 HYDE UNITED 0 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 0 UNIBOND Att. 428

Not a typical 0-0 draw at Ewen Fields, both sides created plenty of chances but a combination of the woodwork and poor finishing failed to break the deadlock. Steve Tobin forced Mark Wilkinson to make a great save early on as the goalkeeper turned his twenty yard half-volley round the post for a corner. Peter Band looped a header over the top from McDonald's free-kick. Dave Hanson couldn't stretch far enough to convert a Jody Banim cross but hit the crossbar shortly after when Banim again provided the cross for his header. Band blazed over the top with just Wilkinson to beat. Frickley, who lost Mark Lafferty early on through injury, failed to register a shot on target in the first half. On forty minutes McDonald's cross was headed against the post by Tobin and it looked as though it would be one of those days for the Tigers. Banim again found himself out on the wing and Walker headed over from the little man's cross when he should have scored. After the break Nicky Cranston gave Hyde goalkeeper Graham Bennett cause for concern as his shot flashed across the home sides goal and wide. Chris Hirst made an excellent saving tackle when Hanson was about to shoot from the edge of the box. Joe McAreavey almost broke the deadlock when his chip had Bennett scrambling backwards but the keeper was able to palm the ball off his goalline. Hirst then wasted Frickley's best chance of the game when his header crashed against the crossbar following a right wing cross. Hyde's Neil Hall almost produced an amazing goal on 68 minutes when his corner kick beat everyone and hit the far post before Frickley managed to clear. Substitute Scott Collins broke throught the Hyde backline but couldn't hit the target when he just had Bennett to beat. Frickley should have won the game during injury time but Peter Owen summed up the whole game when he blasted over with just the goalkeeper to beat.

11-09-00 HYDE UNITED 1 WORKSOP TOWN 3 UNIBOND Att. 642

Worksop took all three points at Ewen Fields with a performance that left Hyde asking all kinds of questions about their title credentials. It had all looked so good for Hyde in the opening 15 minutes. Peter Band hit the crossbar from close range after Banim's chip found him inside the area, Dave Hanson stretched at the far post but couldn't direct Foster's cross into the goal. Jody Banim broke down the left but shot wildly wide of the target before on 14 minutes it was JodyBanim who turned and shot the home team into the lead from the edge of the box. This was as good as it got for Hyde as Worksop took control. Graham Bennett made an excellent save to push a long shot round the post. Veteran striker Kenny Clark hit the side netting for the visitors after Chris Waddle's long pass picked him out. Worksop equalised on 37 minutes when Gavin Smith stormed into the area and squared for Steve Johnson to net from close range. Centre-half Darren Brookes had a great chance to put the visitors into the lead but headed wide from Waddle's free-kick. Kirk Jackson made no mistake on 43 minutes as he rifled home from the edge of the area after Matty Taylor blocked but didn't clear an earlier goal attempt. The game was over five minutes after the break as Worksop went 3-1 up with the best goal of the night. Waddle crossed from the right and Linden Whitehead glanced home a header from six yards. Holmshaw's clearance wasn't defended by Hyde and substitute Marsh found himself in a great position to score but blasted over with just Bennett to beat. Hyde tried to up the pace a little when Banim's far post cross was headed across goal by Band but Brookes defended well under pressure from Hanson. Jackson was unlucky not to score his second when he headed wide from Townsend's cross but Gavin Salmon hit a post for Hyde after Banim and Tobin had combined down the right.
