22-01-01 HYDE UNITED 1 STALYBRIDGE CELTIC 4 CSC SEMI FINAL Att. 642

4-1, good job it was just a meaningless friendly!!! Oh wait! It was a semi-final I'm just reading, well it didn't seem like one. A chance of a cup final, a semi at home against our biggest rivals, it should have been a proud, passionate display avenging our boxing day defeat, instead we got... I don't really know what we got, apart from a good hammering. Celtic got off to a great start when Gus Wilson's mistake let in Tony Sullivan in the first
minute and the forward squared for Nigel Evans who scored with ease. It was soon two when Steve Jones headed home unmarked from a corner kick. On 33 minutes it was 3-0 when Hyde failed to clear a corner and Steve Jones flicked in his second from six yards. Soon after the break it was four when another mistake let in Steve Jones for his hat-trick. Celtic took their feet off the pedal from then on in but still found more scoring chances but couldn't convert. Hyde did manage a late goal when Jody Banim's drive hit a divot and flew past Gary Ingham. Celtic thoroughly deserved their win and the chance to play in the final, they also confirmed that they are the pride of Tameside whether Hyde like it or not. Sorry if this report seems a bit sarcy but after that, what did you expect?

16-01-01 BLYTH 2 HYDE UNITED 1 FAT3 REPLAY Att. 561

Blyth showed their intentions in the first 20 seconds of the game when Craig Perry fired over from close range. Steven Stewart had their next chance when he headed goalwards from a right wing cross but it was a comfortable save for Alex Lawler in the Hyde goal. An almost identical header from Ian Dixon was also kept out by Lawler on 20 minutes, just before Simon Yeo limped off with a hamstring injury. Blyth took the lead on 27 minutes, just as it seemed that Hyde were getting into the game. Carl Pepper's long range shot took a wicked deflection giving Lawler no chance as it flew into the opposite corner of the goal. Pepper tried his luck again a few minutes later but failed to hit the target from 20 yards. Craig Perry had an excellent chance to make it 2-0 but somehow shot wide with just Lawler to beat. Hyde's first noteworthy shot came on 36 minutes when Phil Trainer tried his luck from the edge of the area but shot well wide of Terry Burke's goal. On the stroke of half time Paul Robertson swung a free kick into the area and Anthony Charles was unlucky to see his header fly past the post and wide. On 50 minutes Steven Stewart hit a swerving shot from the edge of the area but Lawler got down well to deny the winger. Hyde could have scored on 56 minutes when Robertson's deep cross had Burke in all sorts of trouble but Peter Band couldn't quite connect with his head. On the hour Gary Innes made it 2-0 with a crisp shot from the edge of the area. Jody Banim pulled a goal back in injury time when he latched onto a poor backpass and rounded the goalkeeper but any Hyde comeback would have been rough justice for Blyth who deserved the chance to take on Maidenhead in the next round.

13-01-01 HYDE UNITED 0 BLYTH 0 FAT3 Att. 556

When Blyth visited Ewen Fields in August they left on the wrong end of a 6-2 defeat, yesterday they showed just how much both sides have changed since that day. Spartans Justin Keegan found himself in a great position to open the scoring in the 8th minute but screwed his shot past the post, as did Steven Stewart just a few moments later. On the half hour Glen Robson went close with a well timed volley but his effort was also off target. Following a corner Phil Trainer had the home sides first chance of the game but he shot over from 12 yards. Hyde had a real let off on 37 minutes when Ian Dixon's 20 yard drive was tipped over by goalkeeper Graham Bennett. After the break it was much of the same and when Dixon got through again he pulled his shot across goal and wide when he should have done much better. The first signs that Hyde might get into the game came around the 55th minute, a good move down the right involving John Foster and Steve Tobin before Simon Yeo shot over. On 60 minutes Craig Perry sped past Gus Wilson before sending a shot goalwards that Bennett managed to parry against the woodwork as Spartans looked for an opening goal. Twelve minutes later Blyth hit almost exactly the same spot on the goalposts after Perry cut the ball back for Robson to head goalwards. Ten minutes from time Andy Martin summed up Blyth's day when his shot flew through a crowded penalty area and wide when a touch from anyone would have won the game. Hyde finished the stronger of the two sides and a slip from Stewart allowed Matty Taylor to cross and David Hanson headed wide of the target. In the final minute Hanson squared the ball for Simon Yeo but Blyth goalkeeper Terry Burke saved well with his legs. At the final whistle Blyth took all the plaudits from their travelling fans whilst Hyde trudged off knowing they were lucky still to be in the competition.

08-01-01 HYDE UNITED 5 STOCKSBRIDGE 2 ULC gs Att. 223

Hyde qualified for one of the three quarter finals after a morale boosting win over first division Stocksbridge, a win against Ossett in the final game would ensure qualification to the league cup. The scoring began on 4 minutes when Peter Band threaded a ball through towards Simon Yeo, Stocksbridge goalkeeper Ross Turner came and missed and so Simon Yeo rolled the ball into an empty goal. Hyde went two up on 19 minutes, Matty Taylor chased the ball down the right and cut back from the goal line to set up Steve Tobin who hit the crossbar with a thunderous drive and Mickey Beirne headed in the rebound onhis full debut. Just after the break a Neil Hall cross was flicked on byPeter Band and then headed into his own goal by the unfortunate Adam Longden as the Tigers made it three. On 51 minutes Stocksbridge found a way back into the game when a cross from the right was headed home by Liam Robinson. It took Hyde just three minutes to regain their 3 goal cushion, John Foster played the ball in from the right and Simon Yeo scored his second despite the best efforts of Turner in the Stocksbridge goal. On 70 minutes Adam Longden make up for his earlier mistake by scoring in the right goal when he poked home from close range following a bit of a goalmouth scramble. Simon Yeo converted his hat-trick on 79 minutes when he steered home a ball from JodyBanim.

06-01-01 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 1 HYDE UNITED 1 UNIBOND Att. 139

The Tigers returned to the scene of their disappointing F.A. Cup defeat and gave a good account of themselves, at least for the first 42 minutes. The game was sloppy for the first five minutes but Simon Yeo should have done better when he fired over the top from twelve yards. Hyde had an escape on 20 minutes when Frickley's new signing from Altrincham, Leroy Chambers headed the ball into the path of Graham Lewis but his shot cleared the crossbar. Hyde went ahead on 32 minutes after Robertsons free-kick looked as though it was too close to the goalkeeper, Andy Carney. Dave Hanson bundled into the custodian forcing Carney to drop the ball at the feet of Peter Band who couldn't miss from 3 yards, a stroke of luck for Hyde as 90% of referees may have given a free-kick. Hyde's recent aquisition from Marine, Steve Rimmer did very well on his debut but it was his partner at the back Mark Beeston who gifted Frickley their equaliser on 43 minutes. He miskicked an attempted backpass and let in Graham Lewis who steered the ball past Graham Bennett from 18 yards. Just after the break Matty Taylor got away down the right for Hyde and had Simon Yeo free in the centre but chose to shoot and badly missed the target. Frickley started to make chances and Martin Fox's drive skimmed the top of the crossbar on its way over. Graham Bennett came to Hyde's rescue on 80 minutes when he saved a goalbound free-kick from Rob Hanby. In the dying minutes a cross from the right was headed over by Leroy Chambers and Hyde managed to hold on for a point. After his blunder against Stalybridge, I have to give Graham Bennett credit as his handling was spot on all afternoon.

26-12-00 HYDE UNITED 1 STALYBRIDGE CELTIC 2 UNIBOND Att. 1109
Celtic maintained their title charge in this local derby to keep within sight of top of the table Emley and the Nationwide Conference. The first 15 minutes was all Celtic and the visitors created a number of corners but failed to make their dominance pay. John Foster came to Hyde's rescue on 18 minutes when he stopped a right wing cross from finding Matty McNeil in a good position. Hyde got into the game more as the half progressed and following a 15 minute stalemate, Simon Yeo managed to fire in a weak shot at the Stalybridge goal but it was easy for Gary Ingham to deal with. In the 3rd minute of first half stoppage time Hyde won a free kick when Steve Pickford brutally scythed down Matty Taylor on the right, Paul Robertson swung the ball into the penalty area and Simon Yeo powerfully headed past Ingham to put the Tigers ahead at the break. Matty McNeil became more dangerous for Celtic after the break and he should have scored minutes into the half but headed over from a good position. Celtic were level on 59 minutes, hesitancy in the Hyde defence saw McNeil first to the ball and Steve Pickford followed this up to roll the ball in from close range. Stalybridge should have gone ahead two minutes later when a cross from the right was missed by Bennett allowing McNeil to head towards an empty goal but Mark Beeston cleared from the goal line. On 66 minutes another cross was swung in from the right, Bennett came again this time clutching the ball in a crowd of players only to spill straight to Steve Pickford who couldn't really miss from 20 yards. Paul Robertson went close for Hyde 3 minutes later with a rising effort which just cleared the crossbar. Gary Ingham then had a moment of good fortune in the Celtic goal when a Robertson freekick was missed by everyone and went through the goalkeepers legs only to hit his ankle and trickle wide of the target. Simon Yeo went close with a header just over but Derby Day belonged to Celtic , this time.......

18-12-00 HYDE UNITED 0 MANCHESTER CITY 8 FRIENDLY
The Tigers officially opened the new extension to the main stand last night with a game against a strong Manchester City side, especially as they play Ipswich tonight. If any game can be described as a 'game of two halves', this one was certainly it.
The first half was evenly contested with neither side taking the game by the scruff of the neck, although Graham Bennett in the Hyde goal did well to stop City taking the lead with two fine saves from Chris Killen and Lee Crooks in the 30th and 43rd minute respectively. At the other end Stuart Walker had Hodgson scrambling across his goal, in the 37th minute, with a right foot drive that just passed the post.
The second half proved to be a goal feast as Hyde made enforced defensive substitutions and the Premier League side took control with a combination of slick passing and movement that yielded 8 goals in just over 30 minutes. Killen broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute when he robbed Mark Beeston, and calmly slotted the ball in to the bottom corner. The second came only minutes later when Leon Mike drove into the box and was promptly brought down by Brendan Aspinall , his first game for the Tigers after recovering from a long term injury. Mike picked himself up and smashed the penalty past Bennett.
The Tigers were beginning to look shell shocked and only wayward finishing by the normally lethal Chris Shuker kept the score down to two. The third eventually came in the 60th minute when Killen again showed class and
composure by wrong-footing Bennett and planting the ball into the net.
With Hyde starting to look ragged, City, showing no mercy, brought on Willie Donachie and promptly increased their lead in the 65th when Shaun Holmes picked up a loose pass the slam in ball into the net from 25 yards.
Dickson Etuhu grabbed two goals in two minutes when he waltzed through the Hyde defence for his first and then pounced on the rebound after Bennett had saved well from Shuker
The 73rd minute produced the goal the Shuker had deserved all night, although when it came, it came from a farcical error by Bennett who palmed into his own net with the shot going wide. Hyde's best, and only chance, came in the 77th minute when Banim volleyed high wide and handsome after excellent work by Wilkinson.
The best goal of the evening was saved to last. Jobson picked up the ball in his own half, drove at the beleaguered Hyde rearguard and sprayed the ball out wide, before continuing his run into the box to convert the right wing cross after Bennett had superbly denied Etuhu his hat-trick.
I would like to take this opportunity for thanking Manchester City for
providing the opposition for tonight's game, and wish them well in the New
Year.

16-12-00 HYDE UNITED 3 ACCRINGTON STANLEY 3 UNIBOND Att. 455

A fitting scoreline between two teams that love to attack but obviously have work to do on their defensive play. Hyde's Dave Hanson should have put the home side ahead within five minutes of the start when he beat the Stanley defence but shot straight at Jamie Speare. Hyde goalkeeper Graham Bennett made a good save from a Steve Hollis free-kick which curled round the wall as Accrington started to make chances. On 22 minutes Russell Payne broke clear of Hyde's John Foster and fired past Bennett from 20 yards only to be denied by the post. If that was a let off for the home side they were even luckier five minutes later when Mark Ceraolo found himself in acres of space with just Bennett to beat but the goalkeeper made a great save to parry his shot round the post. The chances swung Hyde's way just before half-time and only a last ditch tackle from Wayne Maddock stopped Hanson opening the scoring. Hyde went ahead on 38 minutes with a lovely move down the left. Anthony Charles, making his debut, set Simon Yeo away and his cross was headed home by Dave Hanson. On 51 minutes it was all level when Accrington were awarded a free kick twenty yards out, having gone close earlier Steve Hollis wasn't to be denied this time as his powerful shot flew past the Hyde wall and into the goal. Three minutes later Stanley were ahead. A Free kick was taken quickly and caught the Hyde defence knapping as Paul Mullin steered home a free header from 8 yards out. It took only 2 minutes for Hyde to get back on terms, a Paul Robertson cross was glanced home by the head of Dave Hanson skidding past Speare on a slippery surface. Accrington went 3-2 up on 80 minutes when an outrageous 40 yard shot from Paul Mullin looped over the hapless Hyde goalkeeper Bennett and dropped into the top right corner. The defences hadn't finished their seasonal goodwill though and on 85 minutes Robertson's corner was headed in at the near post by Mark Beeston as the game ended in a high scoring draw.

02-12-00 HYDE UNITED 1 SPALDING UNITED 0 ULC Att. 339

Spalding made Hyde fight all the way to the end of this FA Trophy game with a well organised defence and a rigid offside trap. Early on Dave Hanson twice got beyond the visitors back line but fired over on both occasions. On 15 minutes Spalding's Dave Gilbert set Jason Sedlan away down the right and the forward crossed for Craig Wilson in the centre but John Foster got back to tidy things up for Hyde. A flowing move down the middle of the park involving Paul Robertson and Simon Yeo saw Hyde go close but Yeo blasted over. Wilson sped away down the left for Spalding before cutting inside and making Graham Bennett save at his near post. Hyde should have gone ahead on 45 minutes when Yeo raced clear but shot wide with Kevin Cross well out of his goal. 30 seconds after the restart a Mark Beeston cross was headed goalwards by Hyde's Peter Band but Cross saved well. Hyde dominated the next ten minutes with Steve Tobin going close with a curling shot, Hanson shooting wide after Tobin played him in and Matty Taylor hitting the crossbar with a cross that deceived everyone. Cross again saved well on 65 minutes after Yeo had turned on the edge of the penalty area and fired in a shot. Against the run of play on 72 minutes, Spalding almost took a surprise lead when Wilson battled down the right before striking the post with Hyde goalkeeper Bennett well beaten. The winning goal arrived on 78 minutes when Paul Robertson sent a free kick into the area at pace and Simon Yeo guided the ball into the bottom corner with a glancing header. Two minutes from the end Dave Hanson sent a shot goalwards but again Cross saved well to deny the striker. The home side had a last minute scare when Spalding full back Nigel Vince struck the crossbar from 35 yards with a scorching right foot drive.

27-11-00 ASHTON UNITED 3 HYDE UNITED 4 ULC Att. 216
Another win should see Hyde safely through to the next stage after a battling performance at Surrey Street. Initially it was Hyde who had the better chances, Simon Yeo got clear down the left but blasted his shot well over, David Hanson pounced on a poor clearance by Ashton goalkeeper Andy Johnston but Johnston made amends with a good save to deny the striker. It was around the 10 minute mark that the home side took control of the game and it took some nifty work with the head for Graham Bennett to stop a wild Paul Robertson backpass. On 15 minutes Ashton should have gone ahead, a free kick was pumped into the area and was met at the far post by Dean Johnson whose side foot volley flashed across the face of the goal and wide. On 20 minutes Chris Cornelly raced away down the left and hit a shot goalwards only to be foiled by an excellent save from Bennett. Hyde now started to get on top and some good work on the right from Foster and Yeo lead to Peter Band firing over the top when he should have hit the target. On 25 minutes Band again had a good chance, pouncing on a loose ball inside the penalty area his powerful shot was beaten away by Johnston. Hyde went ahaed on 30 minutes, some good battling by Matty Taylor led to a right wind cross which hit an Ashton defender and diverted the ball straight to Simon Yeo who couldn't miss from six yards. It took Ashton only nine minutes to get level, Jeremy Illingworth firing past Bennett from close range. Hyde started the second half quite well with two Simon Yeo efforts going over the top followed soon after by a Robertson shot which also cleared the crossbar. It was the home side who went ahead on 53 minutes however, the ball was worked down the left for Chris Cornelly who cut inside and drove a shot across Bennett and into the far corner. Hyde got equal on 64 minutes, a Robertson corner was headed home by Dave Hanson who stood unmarked at the near post. On 68 minutes the Tigers were in the lead, Tobin set Wilkinson away down the left and a low cross was turned in by Simon Yeo for the best goal of the night. Graham Bennett had a moment of madness for Hyde as he rushed from his goal and missed the ball allowing Cornelly a free shot at goal but Mark Beeston raced back to block his shot. On 75 minutes Hyde got their fourth of the evening, Hanson crossed from the left, Steve Tobin took the ball round Johnston and Lee Wilkinson poached the goal from two yards out making sure the covering defender didn't stop the ball. Three minutes later a piece of shambolic defending let Ashton back into the game, A cross from the left should have been bread and butter for Mark Beeston but the ball went straight between his legs, when he finally realised where it was Chris Cornelly had closed him down and couldn't miss an empty net to set up a frantic last ten minutes. Hyde would have wrapped it up but for a teriffic save from Johnston, Yeo crossed from the right, Hanson headed towards the corner but Johnston threw out his arm to deny the striker. Ashton substitute Danny Toronczak almost scored with his first touch in the final minute, the ball was crossed from the left and the striker connected only to be stopped by Bennett and Robertson right on the goal line. Ashton had many injury time corners but it was Hyde who left with the three points and should now qualify from the group.

22-11-00 ALTRINCHAM 1 HYDE UNITED 1 ULC Att. 211

A last minute equaliser prevented Hyde from taking what would have been a deserved victory from Moss Lane tonight. Early on it was the home teams fluent passing which caught the eye although they had no goal attempts toshow for their play. Hanson & Robertson combined for Hyde and Robertson got into a good position but snatched at the shot under pressure and Coburn saved easily. Alty's Leroy Chambers got away from Paul Taylor and shot from the edge of the box but Graham Bennett got down well to save. Ex-Tiger Jason Gallagher swung in a cross from the right but Chambers header was off target as the striker stretched for the ball. Matty Taylor then had three efforts inside five minutes, his first was a curling shot just over the top from 18 yards, the second was from the same distance but this time a low drive which Coburn couldn't hold but no-one in a yellow shirt was following up and his third effort was from 12 yards which Gallagher managed to deflect onto the post and behind for a corner. From the resulting Robertson corner, Simon Yeo rose unmarked at the near post but headed wide of the target. Hyde went ahead on 44 minutes, a cross from the right wasn't dealt with by the Altrincham defence and Lloyd Richardson slotted home from close range. Just 60 seconds into the second half it could have been all over, Matty Taylor fired in a shot which Coburn saved one-handed, Peter Band should have netted the rebound but put the ball wide under pressure from a defender. Hyde kept on playing good football and had further chances to extend their lead until disaster struck two minutes into stoppage time, the ball was swung in from the rightand James Glendenning calmly slotted the equaliser from six yards.

Hyde's second half performance in front of the BBC cameras was enough for them to take all three points against a useful Whitby side. The TV crew was at rainy Ewen Fields to get footage of the terraces for a forthcoming Watchdog programme. Hyde went ahead in the 6th minute, Paul Robertson's corner was headed home by Mark Beeston despite the best efforts of Danny Key on the goal line. Whitby were level just 90 seconds later when Beeston slipped and allowed Lee Ludlow to race clear before easily slotting past goalkeeper Graham Bennett. Robertson's next cross gave Simon Yeo a chance for Hyde but the striker glanced his header wide of the post. Further chances for the home side fell to Matty Taylor and Robertson but neither could beat David Campbell with their shots. Seconds before half-time Whitby's Lee Buggie hit a powerful drive goalwards but Bennett made a teriffic one handed stop to deny the midfielder. At the start of the second half it was Whitby who had a chance to go ahead, Mark Taylor connected with a corner but Bennett managed to save his header. Hyde re-took the lead on the hour, an inch perfect cross from Matty Taylor was headed past Campbell by substitute Peter Band. The goal seemed to give the Tigers more confidence and Dave Hanson's rising long range drive was the first of many attacking moves from the home side. Stuart Walker got behind the visitors back line but Campbell saved with his legs and soon after John Foster's cross found Band but Campbell stretched to tip his header over the crossbar. A low cross from Robertson on 71 minutes produced the next Hyde goal, Dave Hanson battled to get past Mark Taylor then clipped the ball into the corner of the goal. Whitby made it a nervewracking last few minutes for Hyde when Gary Messer's shot took a wicked deflection on 88 minutes to reduce the defecit. Whitby forced a last minute goalmouth scramble from David Logan's corner but Hyde held on to move up to 9th in the table.

14-11-00 NORTHWICH VICTORIA 1 HYDE UNITED 2 CSC2 Att. 283

A comical last minute goal saw The Tigers progress to the semi-finals of the Cheshire Senior Cup here at the Drill Field. Although Northwich fielded a weakened side due to their F.A. Cup clash with Bury on Saturday, it was the home side that looked impressive early on and they deservedly went ahead on 23 minutes thanks to Lee Poland's 20 yard drive. Further efforts from the Vics caused Hyde some concern but Dave Hanson was unlucky at the other end when he headed wide from ten yards out. The second half saw a role reversal with Hyde getting on top and playing the better football. Hyde won a free kick on 57 minutes about 25 yards out, Neil Hall played a quick ball to the unmarked Jody Banim whose cheeky chip caught Malcolm Rigby just off his line and Hyde were level. Rigby made amends with good saves from Stuart Walker and Matty Taylor as Hyde went on for a winner. When it came it was like something from Laurel & Hardy, a long ball forward two minutes into stoppage time should have been bread and butter for Northwich, the ball was traveling towards the goal area and the nearest Hyde player was 15 yards away, suddenly the centre half left it for the goalkeeper and vice-versa, the ball bounced past both and Steve Tobin couldn't miss an open goal from six yards.
