28-12- 98 WORKSOP TOWN 2 HYDE UNITED 0 UNIBOND Att. 521

Worksop started brightly when on 5 minutes, a header from a corner whistled past the post. At the other end, Simon Yeo headed over from an Annan corner kick. Worksop took the lead on 12 minutes when Linden Whitehead drilled home from the edge of the box after the Hyde defence had failed to clear. Prince Moncrieffe then had a chance when he blocked a Worksop clearance, but he fired well wide of the target. Hyde's only shot on target in the first half came on 26 minutes when Yeo turned his defender but shot straight at Holmshaw in the Worksop goal. Worksop should have added a second when they broke away 3 on 2, the ball was passed left and the forward hit his shot just over. Worksop had the ball in the net on the stroke of half-time but the referee adjudged that Scargill had been fouled in the process and disallowed the goal. The Second Half saw Hyde attack from the off, Neil Hall hit a fierce drive just over and Steve Haw guided a looping header over the crossbar. Paul Taylor tried his luck from 30 yards but his effort never really troubled Holmshaw. Worksop reminded Hyde that there were two teams in the match when Gus Wilson superbly blocked a goal bound shot and then Worksop scored a second in the 65th minute when Lee Hobson headed home a free kick from the right. Paul Taylor then forced a stunning save from Holmshaw when his powerful header looked to have given Hyde a way back into the game. Hyde pressed on but only a last minute header from Washington looked like troubling the Home side's goal.

26-12- 98 HYDE UNITED 1 STALYBRIDGE CELTIC 1 UNIBOND Att. 1357

This Boxing day "derby" was spoilt by the weather, high winds and very strong rain meant that the ball didn't run as it should have. Celtic started the strongest and Sullivan hit the frame of the goal on eight minutes after running on to Powell's long ball. Richard Annan went close for Hyde, shooting over after some strong play from Paul Taylor. The Tigers took the lead on 27 minutes when Tony Rodwell crossed from the right for Simon Yeo to head home his fifth goal in four games. Richard Annan then steered a clearance past his own goalkeeper, but fortunately also past the post. From the resulting corner, Martin Filson headed just over. On 38 minutes, Brendan Burke's free-kick was superbly tipped round the post by Scargill as Stalybridge went in search of an equalizer. Early in the second half, Brendan Burke hit a shot over from 25 yards and then Prince Moncrieffe got behind the Celtic defence only to be thwarted by Statham. Moncrieffe then forced Statham to save again, this time low to his right, but the Celtic goalie seemed to trip Gus Wilson as he went for the loose ball, nothing was given. Peter Band then missed a glorious chance on 59 minutes, faced with just the goalkeeper to beat, he missed his kick and the chance was gone. Band & the rest of the Home side were then made to rue that chance as Paul France headed home a Burke Free-kick on 67 minutes to equalize. Hyde had most of the late pressure but didn't really test the Celtic back line as the conditions got worse. The attendance of 1357 was the largest at Hyde since the FA Trophy Semi Final against Northwich in April 1996 and the largest in the league for over 10 years!

Tigers:- 1. Jon Scargill 2. Kojo Taylor 3. Richard Annan 4. Gus Wilson 5. Paul Taylor 6. Tony Rodwell 7. Prince Moncrieffe 8. Neil Hall 9. Simon Yeo 10. Peter Band 11. Don Page. Subs: 12 Darren Washington 14. Steve Haw for Band 15. Lloyd Richardson.

Man Of The Match:- Peter Band - Personally, I thought Bandy had a mare, he didn't do much and missed a sitter. The whole team didn't play well today and yet, if we had taken half our chances we would have won easily.

19-12- 98 WHITBY TOWN 2 HYDE UNITED 3 UNIBOND Att. 429

Whitby started well, forcing four corners in the first five minutes on Hyde's first visit to the Turnbull Ground. A cross from the right got caught by the strong wind and nearly found the bottom corner of Scargill's goal. Hyde then seemed to burst into life when Moncrieffe took on two defenders before clipping his shot inches wide. On 14 minutes, Peter Band chased a long pass and guided a shot past the goalkeeper to put Hyde one-nil up. Whitby hit back though, forcing Scargill to make a brave save with Annan clearing up the loose ball. Whitby then missed a great chance to equalize, shooting over from six yards with only Scargill to beat. Whitby equalized on 30 minutes when Nick Peverell headed home a left wing cross. Paul Taylor and Jon Scargill then had words with each other after they nearly gifted Whitby a second, Taylor gave Scargill a poor backpass which Scargill gave away and Taylor then pulled down the centre-forward but got away with it. The second half started with Moncrieffe chasing a long ball but failing to connect properly when the goalkeeper confronted him. Again Whitby had a good chance to score but this time fired over from 12 yards with just Scargill to beat. Richard Annan put the Tigers in front again when his deflected shot from 20 yards nestled into the bottom corner of the goal on 69 minutes. Hyde's joy was short lived as Whitby were awarded a penalty straight away, supposedly for handball, which had the Hyde players protesting for fully 2 minutes and led to Don Page & Prince Moncrieffe being booked. The penalty was finally taken on 72 minutes with Whitby's number 3 converting. Moncrieffe fed Simon Yeo on 76 minutes who turned a defender before curling a shot into the top left of the Whitby goal from the edge of the box. Whitby then sustained pressure on the Hyde defence but without creating any real chances allowing Hyde to come away with a good victory.

TIGERS:1. Jon Scargill 2. Kojoe Taylor 3. Richard Annan 4. Gus Wilson 5. Paul Taylor 6. Tony Rodwell 7. Prince Moncrieffe 8. Neil Hall 9. Simon Yeo 10. Peter Band 11. Don Page Subs:12. Darren Washington 14. Steve Haw 15. Lloyd Richardson for Moncrieffe.

Man of the Match: Prince Moncrieffe, Ran and ran causing problems for the Whitby defence. Not his best game though and although there were steady performances, no-one really stood out today. A good team effort!

12-12- 98 HYDE UNITED 2 WINSFORD 0 UNIBOND Att. 430

The game started with neither team really taking a grip although Peter Band had a shot saved at point blank range on ten minutes. Winsford settled and a cross from the left was headed wide and then ex-tiger Colin Lambert hit a shot wide from 25 yards. Don Page went close for Hyde but his shot was always going over. A quick free kick on 32 minutes sent Yeo away down the right and he crossed for Peter Band to score with a scissor kick low into the corner. Early in the second half, Paul Taylor headed behind from a Winsford free kick and then went close at the proper end when he headed wide. On 68 minutes, the Tigers doubled their lead when Simon Yeo took advantage of a slip by the goalkeeper to walk home his third goal in two games. Almost immediately, Prince Moncrieffe got behind the Winsford defence but fired wide when he should have scored. Steve Haw laid the ball to Yeo, whose fierce shot was spilled by the goalkeeper who had to rely on his defenders to clear up. In the final minutes, a long cross from the left by Yeo was met by Band who guided his half-volley just past the post.

Team: 1. Jon Scargill, 2. Kojo Taylor, 3. Richard Annan, 4. Gus Wilson, 5. Paul Taylor, 6. Tony Rodwell, 7. Prince Moncrieffe, 8. Neil Hall, 9. Simon Yeo, 10. Peter Band, 11. Don Page. Subs: 12. Darren Washington for Kojo Taylor, 14. Steve Haw for Moncrieffe, 15. Lloyd Richardson for Page.

Man of the Match: Gus Wilson:- Given by the match sponsors, not my choice but he soaked up the minimal Winsford pressure and didn't do anything wrong. Paul Taylor, Tony Rodwell, Prince Moncrieffe and Peter Band all had good games too.

04-12- 98 LEIGH RMI 2 HYDE UNITED 2 UNIBOND Att. 287

Simon Yeo, called back from his loan at Atherton Collieries started brightly by taking on two defenders but then blazing over the bar. He soon made up for that when on 13 minutes he glanced home Richard Annan's left wing cross to put the tigers one up. Darren Washington got to the byline and pulled the ball back for Moncrieffe who sliced his shot when he should have scored. Jon Scargill failed to collect a cross, leaving it to his defence, but the ball on found a Leigh player who placed the ball into the bottom right hand of the goal. Keith Evans then had the chance to put RMI 2-1 up but he headed over when unmarked. In the Second Half, SIMON YEO scored a beautiful goal by all accounts on 87 minutes, but the tigers were robbed in the sixth minute of injury time(apparently there was only one injury in the second half!)when Leigh scored an equalizer and the referee blew up straight after. We were robbed!!!.

30-11-98 HYDE UNITED 2 RUNCORN 0 UNIBOND Att. 424

Hyde started brightly, taking the lead on 9 minutes when a Tony Rodwell cross was headed in off the post by Don Page. Runcorn then had an effort deflected past the post but Hyde went two up on 15 minutes when Prince Moncrieffe sprung back to his feet and clipped the ball over Mark Morris. The match had few chances and those that came were generally from long range such as when Ruffer rattled the crossbar with Scargill beaten. From a free-kick on the right, Runcorn should have scored but a looping header just cleared the goal. Tony Rodwell hit a shot from 25 yards that had Morris looking worryingly at his post, but it flew the wrong side. Jon Scargill then made a good save when he held a 40 yard shot falling backwards. Chances were even harder to come by in the second half, but a Hyde corner taken by Richard Annan almost caught out Morris at his near post. Scargill then dropped a cross but Matt Taylor was there to hook off the line. Scargill almost gifted Runcorn a goal when he went walkabout and missed the ball near the corner flag but Watson clipped the crossbar from a tight angle.

TIGERS: 1. Jon Scargill, 2. Matt Taylor, 3. Richard Annan, 4. Gus Wilson, 5. Paul Taylor, 6. Tony Rodwell, 7. Prince Moncrieffe, 8. Neil Hall, 9. Paddy Wilson, 10. Darren Washington, 11. Don Page. Subs:- 12. Peter Band for Washington, 14. Jason Hardy, 15. Lloyd Richardson.

28-11-98 HYDE UNITED 0 EMLEY 1 UNIBOND Att. 649

In what was quite a dull game, Emley stole all the points with a goal bundled over the line in the last minute. The Tigers were always going to be hard pushed to win against the tough Yorkshiremen and Simon Jones tested the Hyde defence early on when he ran up the left and fired over. Reynolds then hit a low shot from twenty yards but Scargill dealt with it comfortably. Annan miss hit a corner but the ball found its way back to him and he skipped round two defenders but shot into the side netting. Jones whipped in a free kick for Emley but the header was glanced wide. Again Jones was involved as he sprayed a fifty yard ball which was met on the volley by Bambrook but Scargill tipped the ball round the post. Peter Band had a chance early in the second half but flicked his shot wide when he had beaten the goalkeeper. Scargill made a error when he kicked to Reynolds, but then saved the shot back on goal. Neil Hall ran up the left and hit a rising shot which just cleared the crossbar. In the 90th minute, Reynolds beat Annan & Wilson on the right and crossed for Steve Smith to bundle the ball over line.

23-11-98 HYDE UNITED 1 NUNEATON BOROUGH 0 F A Trophy2 replay Att. 472

The Tigers started without the fear that was in evidence on Saturday. Lloyd Richardson sent a long ball through for Band to chase, but Richard Williams beat him to the ball. Williams again dashed out for the ball on 19 minutes but Prince Moncrieffe knocked the ball past him and rolled it into an empty goal. Another long ball over the top had Williams running from his line again, this time Peter Band clattered into the Nuneaton goalie forcing him to be stretchered off. Kevin Shoemake replaced Williams and looked on with relief as Paddy Wilson ran diagonally into the penalty area but shot wide. The second half started with Lloyd Richardson shooting straight at Shoemake from 30 yards. Ian Muir played a superb ball to release O'Connor but his shot came back off the post and to safety. Jon Scargill then produced a long kick which bounced over the Nuneaton defence but Darren Washington hit his shot straight at Shoemake. Nuneaton's Man of the Match Gardiner then crossed for O'Connor who saw his shot just go past the post. As Nuneaton attacked, Hyde started to breakaway at the other end and as Neil Hall cut inside from the right, he hit a bending shot which Shoemake tipped round the post. In the dying seconds, Shoemake joined his forwards for a series of corners, the best resulting in a volley which Scargill did well to save.

Team:- 1. Jon Scargill, 2. Darren Esdaille, 3. Richard Annan, 4. Gus Wilson, 5. Paul Taylor, 6. Darren Washington, 7. Lloyd Richardson, 8. Neil Hall, 9. Peter Band, 10. Prince Moncrieffe, 11. Don Page. Subs:- 12. Paddy Wilson for Moncrieffe, 14. Jason Hardy for Esdaille, 15. George Switzer.

20-11-98 NUNEATON BOROUGH 1 HYDE UNITED 1 F A Trophy2 Att. 1207

Hyde, with Chris Dolby & Paul Richardson back after injury, were up against the leaders of the Dr Martens League and were lucky to go in goaless at half-time. Chris Dolby swung in an early cross but Richard Williams collected well at the feet of Prince Moncrieffe. A long ball over the top saw O'Connor chase but Scargill rushed out to clear. A Richard Annan tackle then saw the ball bounce to Thomas whose powerful shot went wide. Hyde then won a free-kick on the edge of the box but Dolby's weak shot was wide. Nuneaton's best chance of the half was when O'Connor beat the offside trap and rounded Scargill only for the Hyde goalie to bounce up and block his shot. Barry Williams then made a good run, followed by a shot across goal which was just wide. The first half also saw Nuneaton denied two penalties when Darren Esdaille and later Chris Dolby handled but got away with it. The second half saw Nuneaton take the lead after 49 minutes, a cross from the left was punched by Scargill when he should have caught and Barry Williams lashed home the loose ball. The Tigers were then forced to come out and play a bit and Moncrieffe and Washington had weak shots off target. Peter Band layed the ball to Don Page who appeared to have his standing leg taken from under him just as his was about to shoot but the referee waved play on. The equalizer came on 75 mins when Moncrieffe crossed at the second attempt and found Don Page unmarked at the back post. It was then a matter of hanging on as Nuneaton went for the winner, Scargill only succeeding to palm a cross onto the head of a Nuneaton forward who surprisingly headed over from ten yards. Scargill made two good saves in the closing moments to give Hyde another chance on Monday night.

Hyde United:- 1. Jonathan Scargill, 2. Darren Esdaille, 3. Richard Annan, 4. Gus Wilson, 5. Paul Richardson, 6. Chris Dolby, 7. Lloyd Richardson, 8. Neil Hall, 9. Peter Band, 10. 17-11-98 STALYBRIDGE 1 HYDE UNITED 2 CSC2 (after extra time.) Att. 535

Stalybridge had the better of the first half with Filson and Sullivan causing problems for the un-tried Hyde defence. Scargill made two outstanding saves with The Tigers reduced to only a couple of long range shots which were easy for Statham. The crowd were up for this game, and the shed end on tour were easily winning the singing battle. The second half saw Celtic kick downhill, this seemed to be detrimental to them as all they could do was hoof long balls towards Filson. Celtic were denied a penalty when Gus Wilson handballed, but to be fair he didn't know it until it struck him. Wilson then burst forward from the back, played a one-two with Band and forced Statham into a brave save at his feet. The corner resulted in Band heading straight at Statham. Steve Haw replaced Washington and made an immediate impact, shooting into the bottom corner following a corner kick. Stalybridge were then handed a lifeline when a cross from the right was handled and Power hit the penalty dead straight to beat Scargill. Hyde should have had a penalty with seconds to go as Power clipped Haw, but the little man kept his feet and shot inches over the bar. Extra Time saw Moncrieffe go close for The Tigers, but with a midfield of Rodwell, Richardson and Hall, who were all recovering from injury, the game was starting to pass them by. A long ball over the top beat Celtic's offside trap and when the Goalkeeper advanced, Prince Moncrieffe calmly lifted the ball over his head and into the goal.

04-11-98 HYDE UNITED 2 COLWYN BAY 2 UNIBOND Att. 348

Hyde, playing in their yellow & black away kit were slow to start and a miss-timed shot rattled Jonathan Scargill's post early in the game. Prince Moncrieffe then hit a shot wide of the Colwyn Bay goal. Defensive mistakes then proved costly for The Tigers as on 16 minutes Deniol Graham beat his marker and fired in a low shot to Scargill's right. The Seagulls then quickly doubled their lead on 21 minutes when Graham fed Craig Lawton who rounded Scargill and finished from an acute angle. Don Page headed wide from a corner as Hyde tried to get back into the game, but Graham should have made it three for Colwyn Bay when he shot straight at Scargill when faced one on one.Tony Rodwell replaced Chris Dolby at half-time and had not touched the ball when Prince Moncrieffe burst down the left and squared for Darren Washington to fire home on 46 minutes. The Tigers now seemed to be playing with a bit more pride and Washington was unlucky when his glancing header bounced the wrong side of the post. Colwyn Bay's attacking were now becoming more infrequent as Rodwell began to add his experience to the Hyde midfield. A backpass was chased through by Peter Band making Bay goalkeeper Richie Roberts slice the ball Straight to Prince Moncrieffe who shot into an empty goal from 25 yards. (58 minutes). Colwyn Bay then attacked resulting in Scargill bravely claiming a cross at the feet of Graham. Hyde were unfortunate when Don Page crossed from the right and Washington blasted over from five yards. Minutes later Roberts fumbled a cross, but the ball rolled away from his goal.
