09-03-99 COLWYN BAY 2 HYDE UNITED1 UNIBOND Att. 164

This game probably should not have been played, the pitch was a complete mudbath and it had huge ruts in several places. Chris Dolby found the pitch tough early on when he sped clear of the defence early on, only for him to lose control as he was going round the goalkeeper. Simon Yeo played the ball in to Band who beat he keeper only for a Bay defender to clear almost on the goal-line. Lawton hit a long range shot over for Colwyn and then Scargill made a good save low to his right. Scott Brenchley, making his Hyde debut, hit a left foot stinger from the edge of the penalty area which Roberts managed to parry over and then he saved from Band after he had dropped at cross at the big man's feet. A Yeo cross was headed into Dolby's path by Band but his shot crashed against the crossbar. Just before the break Roberts made a great double save when he blocked Brenchley's volley from close range and then stopped the rebound. The Tigers took the lead on 56 minutes when Prince Moncrieffe powered in a 25 yard shot which Roberts spilled, the loose ball was chased by Yeo who forced Colin Caton (o.g.) to prod the ball into his own goal. Fuller missed a chance for Colwyn when he placed the ball the wrong side of the post with Scargill beaten. Bay equaliser on 76 minutes when a corner was bundled home by Peter Donnelly. Yeo then raced clear of the Bay defence but fired his shot straight at Roberts who saved with his legs. Deniol Graham beat the Hyde offside trap on 80 minutes and lobbed Scargill from 25 yards for Bay to steal all three points.

TIGERS: 1. Jon Scargill, 2. Kojoe Taylor, 3. George Switzer, 4. Gus Wilson, 5. Paul Taylor, 6. Scott Brenchley, 7. Lloyd Richardson, 8. Neil Hall, 9. Simon Yeo, 10. Peter Band, 11. Chris Dolby. Subs: 12. Tony Rodwell, 14. Prince Moncrieffe for Dolby, 15. Leon Mills for Brenchley.

Man of the Match:- Scott Brenchley - Showed some good touches on what was a terrible pitch, probably should have scored with one of his chances and was flying round making tackles. A good start for the new lad.

27-02-99 HYDE UNITED 3 GUISELEY 1 UNIBOND Att. 483

A long ball on 2 minutes saw Simon Yeo race clear of the defence and coolly slot past the advancing Dickinson. Guiseley tried to get back into the game when Parke's chip was headed off the line by Richard Annan. Yeo thought he had scored his second when he headed home Rodwell's chip, but he was adjudged to be offside. Peter Band trapped the ball on 46 minutes and then released Hall down the right, his cross was superb and Steve Haw stooped to head home. Guiseley came back at Hyde and pulled a goal back on 52 minutes, Michael Morrell bursting through the centre and shooting past recalled goalkeeper Jonathan Scargill. Parke played Airdrie through but this time Scargill made a terrific save. Haw & Yeo combined for Hyde and Yeo let fly a thunderbolt which shaved the post. On 85 minutes, the result was sealed with what must be a contender for goal of the season. Simon Yeo received the ball 20 yards out on the left hand side of the area, he set himself and then blasted the ball into the opposite top corner.

Tigers:- 1. Jonathan Scargill, 2. Kojoe Taylor, 3. Richard Annan, 4. Paul Richardson, 5. Paul Taylor, 6. Tony Rodwell, 7. Lloyd Richardson, 8. Neil Hall, 9. Simon Yeo, 10. Peter Band, 11. Chris Dolby. Subs:- 12. Steve Haw for Dolby, 14. George Switzer, 15. Leon Mills.

Man Of the Match:- Simon Yeo - Two more good goals to take his tally to 22. He must be getting sick of all the prizes he's receiving!!!

22-02-99 HYDE UNITED 0 ALTRINCHAM 1 CSC SEMI FINAL Att. 601

The Robins started well and on 6 minutes Paul Ellender connected with a cross but Edgington superbly tipped his header round the post. Altrincham's aerial domination almost led to a goal on 31 minutes as a corner was knocked down into a crowd of players but Hyde managed to clear. On the stroke of halftime, Edgington was adjudged to have picked up a backpass and from the resulting freekick, Paul Taylor managed to block the shot and clear. Hyde came out for the second half with all guns blazing with two shots from Lloyd Richardson being well stopped by Stuart Coburn. Simon Yeo shot just wide of the post and Steve Haw should have done better with a curling shot. Altrincham won the game in the 67th minute when Paul Taylor and Kurt Edgington got into a mix up, Taylor heading past the Hyde keeper and Leroy Chambers pounced to fire into an empty goal. Edgington made a good save from a point blank Phil Power header before Coburn was lucky not to be sent off at the other end after he blatantly flattened Prince Moncrieffe who was through on goal.

TIGERS:- 1. Kurt Edgington, 2. Kojoe Taylor, 3. Richard Annan, 4. Gus Wilson, 5. Paul Taylor, 6. Tony Rodwell, 7. Chris Dolby, 8. Neil Hall, 9. Simon Yeo, 10. Steve Haw, 11. Lloyd Richardson. Subs:- 12. Prince Moncrieffe for Dolby, 14. Peter Band for Haw, 15. George Switzer for Gus Wilson.

Man of the Match:- Paul Taylor - Played well at the back, restricting Altrincham to half chances. At fault for the goal but lets face it, if anyone is entitled to make a mistake it Tayls after all he has done for us this season.

20-02-99 HYDE UNITED 5 BISHOP AUCKLAND 0 UNIBOND Att. 396

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Bishop Auckland are the worst team we've played for a long time. The Tigers started with a goal in the 2nd minute, Paul Taylor crossing from the left, Lloyd Richardson volleying at the keeper and Simon Yeo pouncing on the loose ball. Paul Taylor then made a super tackle on the edge of the Hyde penalty area before Steve Haw's shot on the turn was well saved by the Bishop keeper. On 14 minutes Kojoe Taylor crossed from the right and Simon Yeo buried his header into the back of the net. The 30th minute saw a contender for goal of the season when good play led to Yeo playing the ball across goal for Chris Dolby to hammer home. Early in the second half Yeo pulled away from the defence but shot past the post with the goalkeeper beaten. He soon made up for that when on 55 minutes Dolby held off the centre half so that Simon Yeo could poke the ball past the oncoming goalkeeper from the edge of the box. The Tigers finished off with Simon Yeo scoring his 20th goal in 14 games on 83 minutes when he slotted home a pass from Hall. Bishop Auckland offered very little going forward and Edgington only made one save of any note when he pushed a header round the post.

TIGERS: Edgington, K Taylor, Annan, G Wilson, P Taylor, Rodwell, Dolby, Hall, Yeo, Haw, L Richardson. Subs:- Moncrieffe for Dolby, Band for Yeo, Switzer for K Taylor.

MAN OF THE MATCH:- Simon Yeo - When you score four times in a game you can't really give it anyone else!!!

13-02-99 HYDE UNITED 3 CHORLEY 4 UNIBOND Att. 525

This was not as good as it sounds. Hyde had the better of the first half, Neil Hall should have scored when Haw crossed to him but he missed his kick and the chance was gone. Chris Dolby hit a long range effort over the top and then Hyde scored their first. On 30 minutes Chris Dolby beat his fullback and crossed to Don Page who made sure his header crossed the line. Haw hooked a shot wide after Yeo played him in and Chorley should have equalized but poor finishing gave Hyde a one goal cushion at the break. On 53 minutes Tony Black 's speculative volley looped over Edgington to put Chorley level. Dolby & Page forged an opening for Yeo but his shot on the turn was saved well by Simon Marsh. Chorley went ahead on 67 minutes when Colin Potts drilled home a loose ball following what can only be described as a game of pinball in the Hyde penalty area. Hyde's misery worsened on 74 minutes as Tony Black scored with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area. Three substitutions then seemed to pay off as firstly Simon Yeo scored on 80 minutes and then in the fourth minute of stoppage time Prince Moncrieffe lashed home an equalizer. The Tigers did not deserve this though, and just to prove that point they gifted Chorley a 95th minute winner as substitute Gray headed home a corner.

TIGERS:- Kurt Edgington, Kojoe Taylor, Richard Annan, Gus Wilson, Paul Richardson, Tony Rodwell, Chris Dolby, Neil Hall, Simon Yeo, Steve Haw, Don Page. Subs:- Leon Mills for Page, Prince Moncrieffe for Dolby, Lloyd Richardson for Rodwell.

Man Of the Match:- Steve Haw - This is who the sponsors picked. If it was up to me it would have been Leon Mills - The Reason? He was on the pitch the least amount of time! It really was that bad.

06-02-99 GATESHEAD 0 HYDE UNITED 3 UNIBOND Att. 246

Hyde's first visit to The International Stadium since 1990 was a successful one. The facilities at Gateshead are superb, an 11,750 capacity all-seater stadium, with a running track and a first class recreation hall built into the back of the main stand. The first real chance of the match arrived on 19 minutes when a Gateshead breakaway was stopped by Gus Wilson's superb tackle. Simon Yeo took on a Gateshead defender on 22 minutes and crossed for Peter Band to bundle the ball over the line from close range, with a little help from defender Scott. Band then went close when he headed Dolby's corner wide of the back post. Kurt Edgington made a great save down low to his left after a Gateshead free-kick was met by a flick header. In the second half, Edgington's long clearance was met by Yeo who instead of chipping the advancing goalkeeper Swan, fed the ball to Haw who miscued his shot wide of the empty goal. On 67 minutes Simon Yeo played a one-two with Haw before calmly clipping the ball past Swan. Hyde were awarded a free-kick on 76 minutes after a good run by Dolby, while Gateshead were organizing their defensive wall, Steve Haw took a quick free-kick and caught Swan off-guard to score an easy goal. In the last few moments, Yeo beat two defenders before firing over and Swan blocked well when Richardson played in Yeo.

TIGERS: 1. Kurt Edgington 2. Kojoe Taylor 3. Richard Annan 4. Gus Wilson 5. Paul Taylor 6. Tony Rodwell 7. Chris Dolby 8. Neil Hall 9. Simon Yeo 10. Peter Band 11. Don Page. Subs: 12. Leon Mills for Rodwell 14. Steve Haw for Band 15. Lloyd Richardson for Dolby.

Man of the Match:- Simon Yeo - If there is a space on the field, Yeo will find it. He made the first & scored the second. Paul Taylor again deserves praise as Gateshead were good until the last third, and then Tayls stopped everything.

01-02-99 HYDE UNITED 6 CHEADLE TOWN 1 MPC2 Att. 320

The Tigers turned it on in front of the cameras in a cup tie which turned out to be a stroll. Simon Yeo had a shot well saved by the Cheadle goalkeeper early on and Lloyd Richardson headed over from a corner. George Switzer sliced a clearance into the path of Denny but Edgington saved well. Simon Yeo scored Hyde's first on 29 minutes when he was played in by Dolby & Haw following a flowing move down the left. Simon Yeo doubled his tally on 38 minutes when he rose to head home Dolby's corner. Yeo then missed a chance when he headed over Wilson's cross. Steve Haw volleyed home Tony Rodwell's high cross on 45 minutes to put Hyde three up at the break. Denny poked home following a free-kick on 48 minutes for Cheadle. Simon Yeo headed his hat-trick on 68 minutes after Hall had crossed. On 70 minutes Simon Yeo scored his seventh goal in 3 days when he pounced behind the defence and placed the ball under the keeper. Slack defending by Hyde then let in Cheadle but Edgington parried the shot behind. Yeo's replacement Prince Moncrieffe rounded the keeper on 78 minutes to finish off the scoring, but their was still time for Haw to hit the crossbar and Dolby to have his volley tipped around the post.

TIGERS: 1. Edgington, 2. Kojoe Taylor, 3. George Switzer, 4. Gus Wilson, 5. Paul Taylor, 6. Tony Rodwell, 7. Chris Dolby, 8. Neil Hall, 9. Simon Yeo, 10. Steve Haw, 11. Lloyd Richardson. Subs: 12. Don Page for Rodwell, 14. Peter Band, 15. Prince Moncrieffe for Yeo, 16. Richard Annan for Switzer, 17. Paul Richardson.

MAN OF THE MATCH:- Simon Yeo - Four goals tonight taking his total to 14 in 11 starts, this guy is on form!

30-01-99 HYDE UNITED 3 ACCRINGTON STANLEY 2 UNIBOND Att. 491

Although Hyde had the early pressure, it was bottom of the table Accrington who had the first real chance. Neil Hall's poor backpass was met by O'Callaghan but Edgington just managed to block the strikers shot. On 16 minutes Simon Yeo's deflected shot was turned round the post by Speare and from the resulting corner Don Page rattled the crossbar with a header. Hyde took the lead on 19 minutes when Speare's poor clearance landed at the feet of Simon Yeo who promptly placed the ball over the goalkeeper's head. Edgington rushed out to collect a cross but Heavey beat him to the ball and headed over for Stanley shortly before Hyde extended their lead. On 37 minutes, Simon Yeo chested the ball down on the edge of the box before volleying against the post, the ball bounced out and hit Speare on the head before rolling over the line. Early in the second half, Yeo missed the chance of his hat-trick when he blasted wide after racing clear of the defence. Again Yeo missed his chance of glory, this time he headed Chris Dolby's cross wide. Dolby then beat the full-back before striking a powerful shot which the goalkeeper did well to hold on to. Billy O'Callaghan made a good run behind the Hyde defence on 78 minutes and when the ball was played to him, he made no mistake, shooting through Edgington's legs to give Stanley some hope. Steve Haw's super pass released Dolby down the left who them steered the ball towards Simon Yeo who headed past Speare for his hat-trick (90 minutes). There was still time for Accrington to score again, this time PAUL HEAVEY scored with a flying volley to make the result seem close.

TIGERS: 1. Kurt Edgington, 2. Kojoe Taylor, 3. Richard Annan, 4. Paul Richardson, 5. Paul Taylor, 6. Tony Rodwell, 7. Chris Dolby, 8. Neil Hall, 9. Simon Yeo, 10. Peter Band, 11. Don Page. Subs: 12. Leon Mills for Paul Richardson, 14. Steve Haw for Band, 15. Lloyd Richardson for Dolby.

Man of the Match:- Kojoe Taylor - Why? I don't know who chose him but I can safely say that Simon Yeo deserved the award today for a super hat-trick.

23-01-99 BISHOP AUCKLAND 0 HYDE UNITED1 UNIBOND Att. 201

This game was not as close as it sounds. Bishop Auckland were the worst side we have played this season by quite a way and yet if it was not for the crossbar we may have lost!. Hyde came out with real sense of attack, Simon Yeo tackled back and laid the ball to Band who fed Rodwell whose cross was met on the half-volley by Yeo but he could only find the side net. Tony Rodwell's corner on 10 minutes was met by Paul Taylor but his header was blocked and Peter Band volleyed home the loose ball. Hyde almost scored again in freak style when a backpass bobbled over Bishop's goalkeeper Jones' foot and went inches wide. Richard Annan's cross/shot almost deceived the goalkeeper late in the half but it drifted past the post. Early in the Second Half, Simon Yeo knocked the ball past the goalkeeper but a defender managed to get back and clear. A free-kick wide on the right caused the home goalkeeper to panic after Annan curled in a great shot, but Jones managed to push the ball behind. The Tigers inability to finish off teams almost cost them the game when Bishop Auckland realized that despite the fact they'd been slaughtered, there was only a goal in it. A left-wing corner was met by the big centre-half who firmly headed against the crossbar. A cross from the right led to Edgington leaping to his right to tip a point-blank header onto the bar, a remarkable save. Simon Yeo missing a great chance to sew up the points when he headed wide from 4 yards. In the ninth minute of stoppage time, Bishop Auckland again hit the crossbar, this time the ball dropped to a blue shirt but Gus Wilson dived to block the shot.

TIGERS:- 1. Kurt Edgington 2. Kojoe Taylor 3. Richard Annan 4. Gus Wilson 5. Paul Taylor 6. Tony Rodwell 7. Prince Moncrieffe 8. Neil Hall 9. Simon Yeo 10. Peter Band 11. Don Page. Subs:- 12 Leon Mills 14. Steve Haw 15. Lloyd Richardson for Rodwell.

Man of the Match: Neil Hall - Dominated the midfield to give Hyde the chance to keep on the pressure.

16-01-99 RUNCORN 2 HYDE UNITED1 FAT3 Att. 428

Simon Yeo burst into action when he took on Ward but his cross for Band was too high. Danny Salt fired Runcorn into a 4th minute lead when his 20 yard piledriver flew past Kurt Edgington's outstretched right hand. Yeo then got behind the Runcorn defence but his left foot shot went just wide. Liam Watson latched on to Paul Taylor's poor header but Edgington saved well at his feet. On 25 minutes Hyde were reduced to ten men when Gus Wilson was sent off for a foul on Watson. The two players were in a chase for the ball when Wilson seemed to slip, as he fell he took the forward with him and by the rulebook he had to go. Peter Band acrobatically fired an overhead kick on target from Dolby's corner but Williams saved well. Watson again got behind the Tigers defence but Edgington again saved at his feet. The following corner was cleared off the line and then Watson again burst through the Hyde back three, beat Edgington and then went down, the referee was having none of it though and booked the striker for diving. On the stroke of Half time, Simon Yeo pounced on a poor backheader but Williams parried the ball against the Hyde striker and out for a goalkick. Kojoe Taylor almost grabbed his first goal for the club early in the second half when his 25 yard drive whistled past the post. Neil Hall's long free kick was guided in off the crossbar by Simon Yeo on 58 minutes to give The Tigers a chance of victory. Prince Moncrieffe went close as he cut inside from the left but his stinging effort was well held by Williams. On 78 minutes, Band and Yeo worked well to release Moncrieffe who nutmegged the goalkeeper only for his shot to trickle wide of the empty goal. Hyde paid the penalty for this miss as a minute later Paul McNally put Runcorn into the next round when he poked the ball home after some good work down the right.

TIGERS:- 1. Kurt Edgington 2. Kojoe Taylor 3. George Switzer 4. Gus Wilson 5. Paul Taylor 6. Chris Dolby 7. Prince Moncrieffe 8. Neil Hall 9. Simon Yeo 10. Peter Band 11. Don Page. Subs: 12. Darren Washington for Switzer, 14. Matt Taylor for Page 15. Steve Haw 16. Lloyd Richardson for Dolby 17. Paul Richardson.

MAN OF THE MATCH:- Peter Band, After Wilson's sending off he took it upon himself to cover at right back whilst also contributing up front as the Tigers went in search of an equaliser. Thought:- Maybe after the equaliser, we should have put on a defender to compensate the loss of Wilson. We deserved a replay at least.

09-01-99 HYDE UNITED 0 ALTRINCHAM 1 UNIBOND Att. 964

Altrincham's late goal secured all three points for the league leaders and it was no less than they deserved. A poor first half performance by both sides started when Simon Yeo ran down the right, beat his defender and hit a powerful shot straight at Coburn. Phil Power almost scored for The Robins when he burst into the penalty area but his shot flew past the far post. Ex-Tiger Ricky Harris then went close when his near post header from a corner drifted just wide. Leroy Chambers then caught Hyde on the break but Paul Taylor raced back and made a superb sliding tackle to deny the former Boston striker. Altrincham had a goal ruled out for offside on 40 minutes when a cross from the left was headed in by Power. Hyde were awarded a free-kick just before half-time which Paul Taylor powerfully struck just over the bar. The second half was a different game, as Altrincham started to show the 964 spectators just why they were top of the league. Jon Scargill saved bravely at the feet of Chambers and then Chambers volleyed a shot inches wide after good work by Gallagher. A corner kick led to Harris heading against the angle of the goal and then on 59 minutes Phil Power hit a twenty yard shot against the crossbar. The constant pressure continued without many chances being made and then Hyde nearly robbed Altrincham on 75 minutes when an unmarked Steve Haw headed Chris Dolby's free-kick wide from 5 yards. The inevitable goal came for Altrincham on 83 minutes when Don Page got caught with the ball in the centre, it was worked out left where Paul Robertson's cross was guided in to bottom corner by Phil Power 's chest. We have now lost 4 home games this season, all by the odd goal and all the winners being scored in the last ten minutes.

TIGERS:- 1. Jon Scargill 2. Kojoe Taylor 3. George Switzer 4. Gus Wilson 5. Paul Taylor 6. Tony Rodwell 7. Steve Haw 8. Neil Hall 9. Simon Yeo 10. Peter Band 11. Don Page Subs:- 12. Darren Washington for Band. 14. Chris Dolby for Rodwell 15. Matt Taylor for Page.

MAN OF THE MATCH:- Paul Taylor:- It was either him or Gus Wilson such was the amount of work our two Centre Halves had to do. They both coped very well although it was always a case of when they would score rather than would they? Final Thought:- Altrincham will be Champions.(I hate saying it though!)

01-01-99 STALYBRIDGE CELTIC 2 HYDE UNITED 1 UNBOND Att. 1640

Hyde were the better side for most of the first half, Haw & Band both going close in a goalmouth scramble, Tony Rodwell flashed a half volley just past the post and then almost curled a corner kick in at the far post. Stalybridge went close following a corner when a shot on the volley went just over from 18 yards. Tony Sullivan slotted home for Celtic on 16 minutes after the Hyde defence failed to clear an attack. Brendan Burke burst down the right on 25 minutes and crossed for Tony Sullivan to again slot past Scargill. Gus Wilson fired in a shot that Statham spilled to Yeo, but the goalkeeper recovered well to save a second time. Hyde pulled one back on 33 minutes when Simon Yeo stretched out his leg to steer in Neil Hall's delightful chipped pass. Hyde keeper Jon Scargill was then booked as the linesman indicated he was outside his area when taking a goalkick. Paul Taylor had a header that just cleared the crossbar right on half time. Celtic started the second half brightly with Martin Filson heading over a Burke cross and then Burke firing over when he was unmarked. Peter Band almost leveled for the Tigers after Yeo had held the ball up for him, but his shot was just wide. Statham then saved well from Don Page at close range after another goalmouth scramble. Jon Scargill was then sensationaly sent off having repeated the booking in the first half, this led to an angry confrontation between Scargill, the linesman , the referee and other Hyde players resulting in a number of further bookings for the Hyde team. Paul Taylor then took over the green jersey and was soon tested but Burke's cross was headed over. Hyde pressure didn't break down a strong defence and Brendan Burke should have sealed the game late on but Taylor saved well at his feet.

Tigers:- Jon Scargill 2. Kojoe Taylor 3. Paul Richardson 4. Gus Wilson 5.Paul Taylor 6.Tony Rodwell 7.Steve Haw 8. Neill Hall 9.Simon Yeo 10. Peter Band 11.Don Page. Subs :-12. Darren Washington for Steve Haw. 14 Chris Dolby for Don Page 15 Jason Hardy for Richardson.

Man Of the Match :- Paul Taylor, kept things neat and tidy at the back and was not scared to take over in goal after Scagill's dismissal. The whole squad fought very hard today and deserved more than they got as they were the better team apart from the first 15 minutes. Everyone who played today can hold their heads up and say they did their best for Hyde United, and we can't ask for any more than that.
