28-04-99 MAINE ROAD 0 HYDE
UNITED 1 MANCHESTER PREMIER CUP FINAL
AT OLDHAM ATHLETIC
Boundary Park, the home of Oldham Athletic was the venue for this
years Manchester Premier Cup Final. Maine Road started well with
Otutu firing a left wing cross over the bar. A blow for Hyde came on
13 minutes when Paul Richardson was stretchered off following a
clash of heads. From a Dolby free kick, Prince Moncrieffe headed
wide before a lucky escape when Hall fired across the face of the
goal but no-one could finish off the chance for maine Road. Gus
Wilson gave Morrey a problem when he volleyed from 35 yards but the
keeper dealt with it at the second attempt. Shortly before the break
Morrey again saved, this time from a close range Brenchley header.
Hyde took the lead on 57 minutes when Simon Yeo met with Dolby's
cross to glance a header into the far corner. Yeo was again close
when he headed over following Moncrieffe's cross. Yeo got clear of
Maine Road's defence and rounded the keeper but from a tight angle
the best he could do was hit the post. Injury time saw a Dolby free
kick clear the top corner by inches and while Maine Road upped the
tempo, The Tigers never looked in any trouble.
TIGERS: Edgington, K Taylor, Annan, G Wilson, P Richardson,
Brenchley, Page, Rodwell, Yeo, Moncrieffe, Dolby. Subs: Cox for P
Richardson, Pringle for Rodwell, Haw for Moncrieffe.
Man of the Match: Tony Rodwell - Ran & Ran & Ran, not bad
for one of our elderly players (Sorry Tony!)
Comment:- Funny cup this, If we win it "We should have",
if we don't "How did you get beat by........" (meaning
you're the highest positioned club in the competition, you shouldn't
be beaten by lower league teams) But, Its Silverware and that's
something we've gone too long without. CHAMPIONS!!!!

Lancaster started well with Taylor making a good run but shooting
wide. The Tigers went close as Simon Yeo headed against the crossbar
for a Dolby cross. Mark Thornley pushed a Tony Rodwell shot round
the post and from the corner Moncrieffe headed over when he should
have done better. Taylor again made a good run, this time crossing
for Kennedy to glance his header wide of the post. Lancaster scored
the games only goal on 50 minutes when Edgington parried Diggles
shot, John Kennedy was there to bundle home the loose ball. A Dolby
cross was then met by Simon Yeo but Thornley did well to block his
shot. Another Dolby cross saw Brenchley head wide.
TIGERS: Edgington, Cox, Annan, G Wilson, Page, Brenchley, Haw,
Rodwell, Yeo, Moncrieffe, Dolby. Subs: Turner for Yeo, Pringle for
Haw, Band for Rodwell Man of the Match.
Paul Cox - A commanding game by the big lad making his first start
of the season, lets hope he steers clear of injury now.

19-04-99 HYDE UNITED1 LEIGH RMI 2 UNIBOND Att. 364
Early on Leigh's winger took the ball past Edgington and crossed but the centre forward headed wide. Steve Tobin lashed home a loose ball on 10 minutes following poor Hyde defending to deservedly put Leigh in front. A Moncrieffe centre put in Yeo and then Dolby but the close range shot was blocked for a corner which Yeo then headed against the crossbar. After chasing a long ball, Keith Evans almost doubled the visitors lead but his shot hit the side netting. Neil Matthews collected the ball on the edge of the Hyde penalty area on 22 minutes and placed a precise shot in the bottom left corner of the goal to put Leigh two up. On the stroke of halftime a goalmouth scramble in the Leigh penalty area resulted in The Tigers doing everything but score before Leigh eventually cleared. The Tigers thought they had scored a goal early in the second half when following a corner the ball was cleared off the goal line to which the linesman raised his flag and then put down again, many of the spectators parallel with the line said it was NOT over and his decision was correct. Dolby went close with a curling free kick and then Rodwell, Dolby and Annan combined well but Brenchley couldn't add a finish to the move. Dolby got it right with his second free kick bursting the net, he must have been, however, the only person in the stadium not to see the referee's arm in the air indicating an indirect free kick. Steve Haw scored Hyde's consolation goal after 88 minutes after Moncrieffe had crossed from the right.
TIGERS Edgington, K Taylor, Annan, G Wilson, Page, Brenchley, L Richardson, Rodwell, Yeo, Moncrieffe, Dolby. Subs: Turner for Yeo, Haw for Annan, Pringle for L Richardson
Man of the match: Richard Annan - Made some good attacking runs but his defending needs some work.

12-04-99 EMLEY 1 HYDE UNITED 1 UNIBOND Att. 175
A windswept Welfare Ground awaited the two teams this evening making conditions very difficult. Edgington made a good save from Thompson following an Emley corner early on. Featherstone raced away from the Hyde defence but pulled his shot wide of the goal. Dolby and Rodwell combined well for The Tigers and Rodwell's cross was met by Lloyd Richardson but he directed his header wide. After a good, tricky run by Annan, Dolby struck the crossbar with a twenty yard effort. Yeo's left wing cross was met by Rodwell who kept his shot low and forced a cracking save from Andy Rhodes in the Emley goal. Prince Moncrieffe had a close range shot blocked and from the resulting corner Simon Yeo again brought the best out of Rhodes. The Tigers took the lead after 50 minutes when Prince Moncrieffe headed home Dolby's corner. Hyde's inability to hold onto a lead cost them again this time they got caught by a classic breakaway goal, Dolby's corner was cut out, the ball was quickly played up the left and centered for Paul David to knock past the advancing Edgington on 55 minutes. Kurt Edgington then produced what can only be described as a "world class" flying save to deny Featherstone when he headed from no more than 4 yards, it was truly unbelievable. Yeo released Moncrieffe down the left and, after skipping past a defender he squared the ball into the middle but no-one was in the right position to finish. The Tigers were lucky when Featherstone, looking slightly offside, latched onto a long pass before delicately chipping Edgington only to see his effort come back off the post. Rhodes made another good save, this time it was Yeo who went close before Emley tried again with Featherstone producing yet more from Edgington as he pushed his shot round the post.

10-04-99 SPENNYMOOR 2 HYDE UNITED 0 UNIBOND Att. 221
Hyde's Good away record in the North East was dented as they suffered a 2 - 0 defeat at Spennymoor. They also had defender Paul Taylor sent off for a handball offence in the penalty area after just 27 minutes. In fact Spennymoor took the lead from the resulting penalty as Howarth gave Edgington no chance. The game saw the Tigers have much possession but without the skills of the injured Neil Hall Hyde struggled to penetrate the Moors defence. Late in the second half Spennymoor were awarded another penalty this time when Kurt Edgington brought down one of their strikers. Kurt was lucky only to receive a yellow card for the offence. However he did redeem himself with a splendid save from a Howarth spot kick. But with only three minutes remaining the advantage of the extra man told as Howarth beat Edgington with a low shot to give Spennymoor a 2 - 0 victory.

05-04-99 HYDE UNITED 3 WHITBY 2 UNIBOND Att. 423
Early pressure from Whitby ended when Toman headed a free-kick past the post after slack marking from Hyde. Simon Yeo burst away from the Town defence but pushed the ball too far ahead of himself and Kenny raced out to pick up the loose ball. The Tigers took the lead on 9 minutes when Prince Moncrieffe rose above Kenny to head in Lloyd Richardson's corner from close range. Kojoe Taylor made a mistake at the back which let in Carl Chillingworth who calmly slotted past Edgington at level the scores on 33 minutes. Kurt Edgington made a good save low to his right after Robinson had headed a corner towards the post. Whitby took the lead from the penalty spot on 60 minutes after Kojoe Taylor had fouled, DAVID LOGAN forcefully shot home, the power beating Edgington. Hyde stepped up a gear after this with Haw shooting just wide, Lloyd Richardson clipping the post from 20 yards and Paul Taylor forcing a cracking save from Kenny. On 75 minutes, Richard Annan played the ball through to Chris Dolby who turned on a sixpence before firing a low, hard cross which SCOTT BRENCHLEY converted from close range. On 80 minutes close play on the right led to Brenchley flicking the ball up for MIKE TURNER to head home his first for The Tigers and take all three points. TIGERS: 1. Kurt Edgington, 2. Kojoe Taylor, 3. Richard Annan, 4. Gus Wilson, 5. Paul Taylor, 6. Scott Brenchley, 7. Lloyd Richardson, 8. Don Page, 9. Simon Yeo, 10. Steve Haw, 11. Prince Moncrieffe. Subs: 12. Mike Turner for Haw, 14. Tony Rodwell for Page, 15. Chris Dolby for Moncrieffe. MAN OF THE MATCH: Paul Taylor - Yet another tremendous performance by the big man, as David Barlow said afterwards " We'll make a lot of money from this guy one day. "

03-04-99 ALTRINCHAM 2 HYDE UNITED 1 UNIBOND Att. 923
A bright sunny day was matched by a quick tempo early on in today's game. Altrincham's early pressure forced a number of corners, but Hyde defended well. A Simon Yeo cross shaved the crossbar on fifteen minutes, only he knows if he meant it. Scott Brenchley had Coburn racing across his goal shortly after but his shot bounced the wrong side of the post. Leroy Chambers then had Altrincham's best chance of the half when he rose to head a right wing cross against the post. Coburn couldn't hold on to a Prince Moncrieffe shot but Steve Haw following up was adjudged to have fouled Ellender. Phil Power headed a left wing free kick wide at the back post when he really should have hit the target as The Tigers started to live dangerously. Paul Robertson's deceptive right wing free-kick curled in and missed out everyone, hitting the far post with Edgington beaten. Ellender then tried to play inside his own penalty area, Yeo robbed him of the ball and was then bundled over by the centre-half but the referee waved play on. Steve Haw was brought down by Ellender on 47 minutes and Richard Annan stepped up to bend the ball into the top corner from the resulting free-kick. The Tigers lead didn't last long though, two minutes to be precise as Paul Robertson's corner went straight in at the far post. The game then started to become scrappy with Hyde frustrating title chasing Alty. Tony Rigby's low volley was cleared for a corner and Paul Ellender walked the ball around Edgington before shooting into the side netting. Altrincham's desperate attempts for a winner finally paid off after 90 minutes when ex-Tiger Ricky Harris prodded home a right wing cross to give The Robins a hard fought win.
TIGERS: 1. Kurt Edgington, 2. Kojoe Taylor, 3. Richard Annan, 4. Gus Wilson, 5. Paul Taylor, 6. Scott Brenchley, 7. Lloyd Richardson, 8. Don Page, 9. Simon Yeo, 10. Steve Haw, 11. Prince Moncrieffe. Subs: 12. Mike Turner for Haw, 14. Tony Rodwell, 15. Chris Dolby
MAN OF THE MATCH: Paul Taylor - Tayls played a blinder today, he frustrated Leroy Chambers all afternoon and then Paul Ellender when he was thrown upfront. Credit should also go to Scott Brenchley and Lloyd Richardson who made the midfield a tough place to be.
COMMENTS: Thats three times we've played Alty this year and each time they've beaten us with a late goal. To me that suggests that A) We're not that far behind them and B) Alty will go up because they can make draws into victories whereas too many times this year we've conceded in the last few minutes( Gainsborough 1-2, Droylsden 2-2, Guiseley 0-1, Blyth 0-1, Emley 0-1, Leigh 2-2, Chorley 3-4, Bamber Bridge 1-1 ) thats a fair few points we've dropped.

27-03-99 HYDE UNITED 1 BAMBER BRIDGE 1 UNIBOND Att. 467
An early corner saw Leaver head just wide as Bridge showed they would be strong in the air. Lloyd Richardson hit a long shot which was straight at Dootson & Richard Annan struck a thunderbolt but Yeo deflected the ball away with his head unfortunately. Bamber attacked down the left and Greenwood just failed to connect with his head. On the stroke of halftime Moncrieffe's 18 yard shot was deflected behind for a corner. Moncrieffe clipped the post early in the second half when he raced past two defenders and fired in a shot. Yeo's looping shot was then kept out by back-pedalling Dootson and then the games most controversial moment happened. A Lloyd Richardson corner was fumbled by the keeper and Steve Haw's shot was stopped on the line by a defenders arms, the linesman raised his flag for a penalty but then amazing put it down and carried on much to the disgust of the whole stadium. The Linesman thought he was off the hook when, in the ninetieth minute, Annan & Turner played in Simon Yeo to slot home and seemingly win the game for the Tigers. Yeo then gave the ball away on the halfway line and Bamber forced a corner from which Andy Whittaker knocked the ball home from close range.
Tigers: Edgington, K Taylor, Annan, G Wilson, P Taylor, Brenchley, L Richardson, Page, Yeo, Band, Moncrieffe. Subs: Turner for Band, Haw for Moncrieffe, Dolby.
Man of the Match: Gus Wilson - Played quite well at the back but my vote would have been Lloyd Richardson whose passing and attacking ideas were both very good today.

22-03-99 HYDE UNITED 2 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 0 UNIBOND Att. 357
Tonight's game started in quite appalling conditions with the Ewen Fields pitch struggling to cope with the vast amounts of rain that had fallen throughout the day. Hyde started brightly and a clever Lloyd Richardson cross was cut out just as Band was ready to pounce. Scott Brenchley won the ball on the halfway line and surged forward to hit a 25 yard shot which the goalkeeper pushed away to Moncrieffe who again forced the Frickley keeper to save. The Frickley stopper was again one step ahead of Hyde when he tipped a Lloyd Richardson shot around the post. From the resulting corner on 26 minutes Paul Taylor rose to head home the Tigers first with Yeo ready to prod home any attempt to stop the header. Yeo then took on four defenders and wrongfooted the goalkeeper as his shot trickled past the post. Again the Frickley goalkeeper stopped the Hyde forwards, this time Prince Moncrieffe who hit a powerful shot from 20 yards which was well held. Frickley came out for the second half as a different team and were unlucky not to score when Edgington's punch went backwards but Band cleared off the line. Some bad feeling entered the game with three players being carried off and the referee called together the two managers Mike McKenzie & Ian Thompson to calm down the players, just after this Frickley almost equalized when Armstrong looped his shot just over the angle. A Moncrieffe cross from the right was met by Yeo who fired wide of the target from 10 yards. On 88 minutes Yeo went walkabout, taking on 3 defenders before losing control, Don Page picked up the loose ball and gave it back to Yeo who crossed for Prince Moncrieffe to slide home the second.

20-03-99 FRICKLEY ATHLETIC 3 HYDE UNITED 0 UNIBOND Att. 180
Why do we never play well at Frickley?. Frickley hit a long free-kick to Green, their huge centre-forward, who brought the ball down and had a shot blocked by the Hyde defence. Gary Hatto unleashed an 18 yard volley on 19 minutes but his thunderous shot dipped just over the crossbar. Yeo tried to get Hyde going but was caught by Hilton's last ditch tackle after a great run down the right. Hatto again went close for Frickley, this time with a chip which eluded the far post. A Paul Richardson error early in the second half let in Armstrong but Edgington saved well with his legs. Frickley took the lead on 52 minutes when a cross from the left hit the bar and fell to Green who blasted home from six yards. A Lloyd Richardson cross was caught by the wind and almost deceived O'Connor in the Frickley goal, but he recovered to catch on the goal line. In the 81st minute Paul Richardson was adjudged to have fouled Green and Gary Hatto placed the ball to Edgington's left to score. Frickley were awarded another penalty on 87 minutes after Annan had brought down a Frickley forward. Hatto again sent Edgington the wrong way, this time to his right. In the final minutes, Moncrieffe beat the goalkeeper to the ball but just to prove it wasn't our day, his header was cleared off the line. Monday should be fun!!!!
Tigers: Kurt Edgington, Kojoe Taylor, Richard Annan, Gus Wilson, Paul Richardson, Tony Rodwell, Lloyd Richardson, Neil Hall, Simon Yeo, Chris Dolby, Prince Moncrieffe. Subs: Peter Band for Dolby, Scott Brenchley for Rodwell, Don Page for Yeo.

16-03-99 GLOSSOP N. E. 1 HYDE UNITED 3 MPC Semi Final Att. 445
Hyde started the game looking for an early goal and Moncrieffe went close after Dolby played him through but he shot over from a tight angle. Glossop keeper Merrick raced to clear a through ball but only found the head of Yeo but his long ranger header was cleared. The Tigers took the lead on 11 minutes when a through ball by Hall wasn't collected by Merrick and the ball dropped at the feet of Lloyd Richardson who scored his first goal for Hyde. Tony Rodwell curled a pass around the defence on 13 minutes and Chris Dolby lobbed the goalkeeper from 18 yards. On 30 minutes, Lloyd Richardson crossed from the right and Chris Dolby's mis-hit shot managed to squeeze underneath Merrick. The goal spree never happened in the second half although there were a number of missed chances. Prince Moncrieffe hit a power shot from 20 yards which Merrick grasped at the second attempt and then Glossop went close with O'Connell hit a shot just wide of the post. A Kojoe Taylor cross eluded everyone before hitting the post and bouncing to safety. Dave Ringland almost scored an amazing own goal but Merrick managed to push he header round the post. Prince Moncrieffe then rounded Merrick but let the ball run away from him. Glossop scored a good free-kick consolation goal in the last minute which made a comfortable victory look a bit closer than it actually was. Glossop scorer unknown (sorry!)
Tigers:- 1. Kurt Edgington, 2. Kojoe Taylor, 3. Richard Annan, 4. Gus Wilson, 5. Paul Taylor, 6. Tony Rodwell, 7. Lloyd Richardson, 8. Neil Hall, 9. Simon Yeo, 10. Chris Dolby, 11. Prince Moncrieffe. Subs:- 12. Paul Richardson for Wilson, 14. Peter Band for Dolby, 15. Don Page for L. Richardson, 16. George Switzer.
Man of the Match:- Lloyd Richardson - Scored his first goal for the club and made the third for Dolby.

13-03-99 WINSFORD 0 HYDE UNITED 2 UNIBOND Att. 270
The Tigers arrived at The Barton Stadium dog track to find a pitch which resembled a long jump pit, although it was much better than Colwyn Bay. Lloyd Richardson's cross found Simon Yeo early on but his header looped over the crossbar. On 19 minutes Prince Moncrieffe collected the ball from Richardson before dribbling past three defenders and curling the ball into the corner of the goal with the outside of his boot. Scott Brenchley then had a shot saved after Moncrieffe had played him in. Winsford only threatened the Hyde goal occasionally during the first half and the back four held firm on each occasion. The Tigers increased their lead on 39 minutes when the ball dropped to Paul Taylor 35 yards from goal, basically he belted it and was as surprised as the rest of us to see it fly past John Bagnall and into the top corner. The second half was really a non event as Hyde were happy to settle for two and Winsford just couldn't create any chances. Brenchley almost scored his first goal for The Tigers but his volley hit the head of Simon Yeo and bounced to safety. Winsford's only real attempts on goal came when Talbot headed a cross over the bar and when Edgington recovered from a slip to save from Whittaker who was through on goal. The Tigers should have finished the game in style as Lloyd Richardson burst through the centre but the midfielder could not produce a finish to match his run.
TIGERS: 1. Kurt Edgington, 2. Kojoe Taylor, 3. Richard Annan, 4. Gus Wilson, 5. Paul Taylor, 6. Scott Brenchley, 7. Lloyd Richardson, 8. Neil Hall, 9. Simon Yeo, 10. Peter Band, 11. Prince Moncrieffe. Subs: 12. Chris Dolby, 14. Steve Haw for Yeo, 15. Don Page for Brenchley.
MAN OF THE MATCH:- Lloyd Richardson - This was a tough call today as no-one played badly yet no-one stood out. I've given it Lloyd because he seemed to find a red shirt with most of his passes and also because he has fought hard to get back into the side after injury & bad performances.
